Based on reports from the AIMExpo, it sounds likely we'll at least see the 1190AX next year. I think it's gonna be very interesting to see EBR's "unleashed" take on this bike.

I'm expecting (and of course I may be completely wrong) something very much in line with the Ulysses. An 1190cc water cooled Uly will put it in direct competition with the Ducati Multistrada. This would require the fewest changes to the 1190 platform as opposed to targeting the "hard-core" ADV bikes like the BMW GS and KTM.

I think the most interesting thing about the 1190RX that has implications for the AX is how good the fuel mileage is: EPA highway rating of 51+ MPG (!). That gives it a fuel range of 200+ miles which is better than the XB12X. 185 HP and an amazingly flat torque curve are pretty impressive too. I suppose EBR could leave that engine just the way it is and have an amazing ADV bike, but perhaps they can tune it for less peak horsepower and MORE torque and even better fuel mileage.

Re AX: I wish I could have "held out" that long, but...

One thing, however: PRICE. If EBR can't price the AX within the budget of some of us, won't it be just a philosophical exercise? (I've got nothing against philosophical exercises, y'understand...)

philosophical exercises

Whatzz that.....some of them thar big Doctor words?

In this context would it mean "teased me with owning one right up to the time the price was announced, at which point if I feel it costs too much I will not consider owning one, therefore my time will have been wasted except to garner the information that was necessary to be used in determining that I will in fact not be using this information"?

Well, the RX is priced at $18,995. If the AX is similar (which has been stated in a couple of articles) that'll put it on par with the Multistrada. Whether that's within my price range (or anyone else's) a year or so from now is a whole 'nother question.

It would be nice to see something from EBR in the way of an Adv bike sometime soon....or even more information on the possibility of such.

I would not think it would do well. Why?

Well given all the crap some have said about, and not fair, XBs what would you expect?

Oh dear my tires only last "10k miles" and I need a "chip-in-head" to remember to check my wheel bearings. Get a grip people. It is a bike not a fecking moon shuttle.

It is people like YOU who killed Buell not HD.

You are so right Ulyman, it is just a motorcycle! A motorcycle that among many brands available, was fraught with a lot of issues. Price was one, as the younger folks were interested 6000 to 9000 bracket on price. The inability to match up with these lower price 600 cc on tracks was a big part of the appearance. H-D dealers normally here weren't associated with sportbikes and as such did not market the buells like they could have. From the purchase on in most dealers, you were a number from then on and lucky for any service to happen because they sure didn't make a lot off sales or service from the Buell community. there was never the volume of business to keep it going. Buells sat on dealer floors to the point of anyone just hinting at being interested, they wanted to unload it because it had been on their floor for two years. Hell, there was a handful of men in this area that bought 1125's when the company shut down and prices were halved. they did not buy when the price was retail. EBR has brought a world class bike to market this past week and it has it's path to follow. As far as a AX being made, well I don't see any Multistrada's running around locally either. The dollars in each of our budgets is different, as our choices of what to buy. How many of us will continue to support Eric Buell? A free market will tell. Lastly, look at the average age of who owns, lets say the uly. I'm 57 and followed Eric for all his career. wanted one in the worst way and finally bought a used 12x in feb, 08. Been steadily working on it since. mostly improvements, not many breakdowns. Yesterday, Buewolf and I got together for over 300 miles. both bikes ran flawlessly and when they ore on, buddy, they are on! It is a work in constant motion and I intend to keep mine going for a loooong time.

(sigh....)

It's EriK. Please.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the AX brought ABS to the EBR lineup. We already have TC on the RX; the SX will likely be a stripped-down 'naked' bike; but an ADV-type ride these days is pretty much expected to have ABS on board. But that's just my .02.

According to several Badwebbers, ABS was planned for the 2011 model Ulysses. Apparently the 08-up ECM has enough "brain power" to accommodate ABS functions. Given that, I'd say it's certain the AX will have ABS.

Uly-man,
Why so angry/bitter?
All forums tend to emphasize the negatives of a particular brand/model because folks always are more willing to complain than to praise. It's just human nature.
I actually think this forum is far more positive than most, yet still massively useful. that's why it's the only one I really follow.
My Buell is no Honda. Good and bad, but I wanted it that way. Still happy with that.
I don't think negative customers killed Buell.
I still say it was simply HD not being able to have vision outside of their cruiser target market.
EBR is not trying to be a mass appeal bike. That takes bigger resources, capital, plants, R&D, and the economies of scale that go with it.
That means some of us may be left out of their new target customer pool.
Unfortunate, but that is the only smart way for EBR to gain a foothold.
Building an EBR CBR is not going to do it.

I look at it this way: we have at least 1 year until we see an "AX", and longer until it is available. And these projects are rarely on time! that gives us time to:
- start saving, if we can
- see how the RX does and decide if we still want in

In the meantime, my Uly still does what I bought it for.

I think the AX will be a lot like the touring set up on the new 1290 Super Duke R...man, that thing looks awesome-spec wise anyway-appearance wise the windshield leaves something to be desired.

I would be very impressed (and pleased) to see the RX come in around that price. I was under the impression that the EBR bikes were at a real "boutique" price (like 40K).

Thanks much for the info. Unfortunately, I won't be in the market for a while. And by then I'll prolly be dead.

Craig- They appear to be. There are a lot of detail shots floating around the net, but I suppose we'd have to look at one close enough to find the manufacturer's part number to know for sure.

Would love the chance to ride that RX.

I would imagine given the push we are seeing in the Adv bike market that the same motor would power the AX. Speed and performance on asphalt and with the ability to actually do some trail riding. I am guess purely speculating but I would think a good suspension and the ability to change riding modes to tame the motor down for loose surface riding. ABS is a given almost in my mind with a function to switch it off. Fuel range and great lighting are also a must have. A seat that you can actually ride for several hours would be a huge plus.

I know its all just wishful but hey thats part of the fun and excitement of a new release. I had planned to get the new KTM 1190 in the spring but if EBR is truly going to release the AX I would wait....or try to.

Me too, Court.. at my age I'll be in the saddle quite a few more years.. it is certainly destined to be a rewarding heartfelt adrenaline charged journey carrying the Buell torch.. I'll ride "vicariously" in your "times, trials, tribulations and intercontinental travels" in the early days of Buell

EBR says the dealer list will be coming out shortly, but some dealers have already started advertising their EBR affiliation. I know of dealers in Georgia, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas; I'm sure there are others.

I haven't really been following the EBR story super closely. I find it interesting that the bike pictured above has the exhaust on the side. What happened to the centralization of mass concept?

The RX has two mufflers, one under the bike and one at the side.

To quote CycleNews: “Our engineers(EBR) found that a secondary resonator has a large benefit to helping a V-twin make power and mid-range. The resonator provides an opportunity for a quarter-wave tuner that adds mid-range performance while meeting noise regulations.”

I believe that both pipes on the upswept muffler are open tubes. The lower yellow depicted one is a resonator that adds mid range performance (kinda like the old Helmholtz resonator that quieted noise in the old tuber's airbox) while the upper tube is the outlet pipe - Ref Cycle World's recent article on the 1190RX.
