I was wanting to take the plastic side bags off and go with a Wolfman type soft luggage but unsure which bags and tank bag works best. i figured someone here has already done this so I wanted to ask. Our 9y/o will be 2 up with me now that we have him rigged out in good riding gear. So this is a factor also that i would be 2 up with him. Wife has her own bike. As we plan to start road tripping more I just want to try to get it set up better. Grateful for any help or suggestion in this area. (Message edited by kag on September 22, 2013) | ||

I tried lots of different things on mine. I ride 2 up more often than not, and found that size was the biggest issue. If the bags were too big/long they covered up the passenger footpegs or got in the way. A lot of folks have put their bags on backwards to fix this, but in my experience they still got in the way of the rear footpegs. But my GF is taller than myself, with longer legs of course  , so if you're only ridding a youngster I would think you could get away with larger bags. I too liked the wolfman's, finding them to be of the best quality. However, the Summits got in the way, so I would suggest anything smaller than those. I ended up cheaping out and got the Coretech super 2's. For the price they're excellent. Not a single complaint, other than I wish they were just a bit bigger. I've got the happy trail SL racks btw. | ||

The wolfman tankbags work well. The Rainier has been used to great experience. And I think the Timberwolf would work great to. I have an old wolfman tank bag that I'm using and love it; but have always wanted side pockets. You can get the Rainier and optional large pockets to go with. For Saddle bags, think about chase harper as well. I'm using the ET 4000's and like them very much! Thanks for the replies and advice. Something to look at and consider. I will look at these. First is a tank bag. I did breakdown and buy the rear rack system from the UK. Spendy but I wanted a rear rack for sleeping bag and tent. | ||

The wolfman I have, I have had for four years and bought it used. I think it is a late 90's or early 2000's model; and has held up well. They last a long time and are worth the money IMO. | ||

Found on fleebay. Great bag you might be able to get for under a $100.00 This was the bag before they came out with the Rainier. Side pockets look bigger than those on the Rainier. If you have a top box/case (I don't as I think they look ridiculous hanging so far off the back of the bike) you could get a Ventura Bike-Pack (without the fitting frame) and just slot it over the Triple Tail. I have an old one I bought in 1996 for a R1100GS. It doesn't fit perfectly but when the bag is full it's fine. Mine is a 61L so it's big and, incidentally is far better quality than the similar things H-D shops sell. | ||

Of course, you don't need to have the case as well. It's just that together it's ALL you'd need with no extra width to the bike. | ||

Many times I have heard how well the hard bags hold up to having an accident, ala side roll bar to protect your legs, the passenger's legs, and the bike itself, even in a non moving tip over they work well. Just wondering why you would want soft ones when you have the hard ones. Tank bag.....I cannot help out.....mine is vintage Buell stuff.   | ||

Good heads up on the ebay items. Looking them.... I want something different plus I am gravitating towards more and more Adv bike gear. I am sold on textile gear and its adaptability. I find i am spending more and more miles off pavement when riding for pure fun. I commute daily on my bikes on old two lanes but for pure pleasure riding and wander lust its the gravel roads I like. Saving my pennies for some a second set of rims and knobbies. i guess in the end, "Why"....because...  |
