The brass colored grommet fell out of the top when I took the carburetor apart. I think it goes on the needle as shown in the picture. Can anyone confirm this?

It's the carb for a 2009 Blast |

No. Unless they used it as a needle shim, it goes in the screw hole that the throttle cable assembly bolts on to, on top of the carb. There is only one. |

Thanks. Also...The bike was sitting for a long time so that's why I cleaned the carb. I removed and cleaned the jets but not the idle screw. Do you think cleaning the idle screw is necessary? The jets were badly gunked up. |

Well, I don't think any of it was necessary. I would've replaced the jets with better jetting anyway and jets are cheap. Gasoline is a solvent. There isn't any harm in pulling the idle mixture screw as long as the o-ring doesn't break, you don't lose any parts and you only lightly bottom out the screw when reinstalling. It's the least riskiest part too remove! |

Thank you. I am so appreciative to get your advice. I just wish I got your advice earlier because I did some bonehead things. It's embarrassing but here goes. The first time I disassembled the carb, I followed the service manual and removed the float, jets and top components for cleaning (the jets were totally sealed over). I ended up putting that brass colored piece in the top end of the carb. The bike did start and run, but poorly. It stalled out at slow throttle. We took it around the block several times. The next day it wouldn't start. I thought maybe the slow jet wasn't cleaned enough so I took the carb apart again. The bowl had these shiny metallic flecks on it (duh- plating from the brass colored part). That's when I asked the original question that started the thread. This time I didn't remove the float, just cleaned and checked the angle was within spec (it was). I re-cleaned the jets and assembled correctly. The bike doesn't start. Do you suggest replacing the jets with new? Or is there something else needed now that you have a complete history. |

Good one ...Yea I saw the oak tree post, and I do feel like a moron. But yes, I drained the tank and filled it with fresh hi test with a gas additive. I made sure the gas level in the tank was high enough to be above the carb so it would fill the bowl by gravity. Also I checked spark and replaced the plug (before I messed up the carb) so I think it's a gas flow issue. |

Well I would see if it starts with starting fluid..... and then see if you can keep it running. Try manually choking the carb with your hand (DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID with this method). If it starts then you know the carb is getting fuel, it's just being metered wrong. |

Thanks Gearheaderiko. I'll try that. Just to be clear on procedure... how do I manually choke with my hand? I would say how I think to do it, but that risks further embarrassment. |

I am happy to report that the starter fluid worked. It ran like s__t for about 10 minutes then settled down (revs were going up and down without moving the throttle). It restarted fine when warmed up and I took it around the block about 6 times. Acceleration is great but it will stall out at idle. Do you think the slow jet needs replacing or will it iron itself out? I plan to ride it to work tomorrow (about 2.5 miles). Many many thanks! |

Replace the slow jet with a #45. It may not help, but its the right jet and if the old one was as gummed up as you say it was, it needed replacing anyway. |

Ok. All set to ride the bike to work and it wouldn't start. I'm planning to replace the slow jet but is there something else that may be preventing the bike to start without starter fluid? Seems to run fine (except at low throttle) once it's started. Needless to say I didn't ride it to work because I don't want to get stuck. |

Yes the AE among other things. But nothing is worth worrying about until you change that jet. |

Replaced the slow jet and that did the trick. Thanks so much! |
