The local buyer for my Uly backed out. I have an offer from a member on the BuellXB forum who is a few states away. I dug around and found some of his posts, seems like a legit guy. Anyone have an opinion on the best/safest way to accept funds from someone out of state? |

I recommend getting a small deposit from Paypal, and have him bring the remainder in cash when they come to pick it up. Or you can just wait and get the full amount in cash when they arrive. |

Thanks guys. Looking into direct funds transfer w/the CU. I've sold some stuff online before but never this dollar amount so I'm trying to just be cautious instead of paranoid. |

if they are with a bigger bank (USbank/Wells Fargo size) and have a local branch, i'd accept a money order/cashier's check from them If I could go along when they got it. mostly so I didn't have to carry the fat cash envelope around. direct transfer, money orders, and cashier's checks all usually have fees associated with them, and which is cheaper depends on the institution. mine just happens to make money orders cheaper than cashier's checks for whatever dumb reason (possibly processing overhead?). |

Cash is king; long as it's not funny money. A friend sold his H/D a while back; 13k cash. We met the buyer in the parking lot of the local police station. There was no problem... |

US postal service money orders. Only problem is they only come in denominations of $1000 max. They only cost a dollar though so not that big a problem. I haven't sold anything that way in a while but my credit union could check the legitimacy of a Postal money order over the phone. Other money orders, cashiers checks, etc. could be counterfeits, they could take 2 weeks before you find out. Although, CASH IS KING. |

Cash is king, although if you go to your bank and put in more than 10k, you get to fill out lots of fun IRS forms. Direct wire transfer is instant, guaranteed, and non-reversible. They can't "stop payment". If things don't work out...you can wire it back to them. Usually a $25 fee - cheap peace of mind. I closed on my house with a wire transfer, from my Blackberry. Just like online banking, moving money from checking to savings...only you move money from you to the recipient. |

I'm not certain, but, think the triggering limit is quite lower than 10k now days. |

I bought my wife's bike from out of state. I arranged to have the bike dropped off at HD of Baltimore, they inspected it and prepped it for shipping. I made the arrangements with the service manager ahead of time. Once the bike arrived, they called and said it was good to go, I called the seller, wired the money,we were done. The bike arrived here in AZ, no problems. |

I think the prep and inspection for the bike cost me $50, as I recall. |

1. Get a deposit via paypal to confirm the purchase. 2. Have the buyer bring a cashier's check for the remaining amount from a large nationwide bank that has a branch in your area. 3. When the buyer arrives, go together to the bank branch office that issued the cashier check and cash the cashier check right there. If you don't want to carry all that cash on you, pay the $15-25 to have the bank re-issue you a cashier'c check in your name. |
