I agree... it would be nice if there if there was a way to test the ECMs. I don't think many of them would be caught by a test apparatus though. The photos I have seen of an ECM that was hacked open showed radial fractures in the solder where the pins attach to the board. This would cause a poor connection, not necessarily a lost connection. Without any vibration some 'failed' ECMs would likely test fine. Thanks a lot for your offer Desert Bird! I am going to try my stocker and see if things change (for the worse or better) if there is any change I might just take you up on that! Maybe I've got two duds!?! Sure would be nice to find someone like you locally.... I've never seen another XB12 in my area. |

Not wanting to hijack the thread here, but is there a significant difference in construction or quality between the stock ECM and the EBR? Is there a functional difference between the 2 (assuming a nonprogrammable EBR) for 08s that are essentially stock, like are there fueling glitches or something that the EBR resolves? |

Clearly one would anticipate improved overall performance from an ECM marked "RACE USE ONLY", but the main reason I bought the EBR was that it was less expensive than the stock unit. I did improve seat of the pants performance somewhat, changed the high idle characteristics and the fan operation. |

"It's Frustrating and somewhat embarrassing to ride my bike... Not a very happy Uly owner! What should I do next?". You need ECM-SPY or something to test the bikes engine and air temp sensors, other parts as well, and a FACT that they can go wrong and not show a CEL light. |

SCORE! I just found out that Caterpillar uses the Deutsch connector in their underground mining equipment! There is a box full of them right here on site! Here I was planning to order a cord for $50 plus taxes, shipping, duty... probably close to $100 all in... now I'll have a cord for next to nothing!

Is that for the plug only? If it is you will still need the USB to TTL serial cable to fit on the end of it and the driver for it. Go to www.ftdichip.com for the driver. The cable from them is TTL-232R-3V3-WE. |

TTL cable is on it's way already... $18. Hopefully this will result in some answers about my bike! |

Cool. A couple of good tips. You only need to use three wires of the cable but fit the forth anyway as it will act as a strain wire for the others. Also take the Deutsch connector water seal off as it makes removing the plug a lot easier and you do not need it anyway. |

Have to admit I could only make myself skim Danair's story, but I can tell you for sure you can get a header to glow without a combustion problem. Not saying that should happen on the Uly, though. Modern car engines are 950C-1050C exhaust temperature for state of the art DI models. We get our turbos to glow red all the time in our testing. Granted, some of it is at extremes that few will ever see, but it also happens during normal gas stand testing at peak (but normal) exhaust temperatures. We use natural gas burners to simulate exhaust gas, so incomplete combustion is not a factor. We can bring in more air as needed and mix it well. It all boils down to the temp, the material used in the turbine housing/exhaust manifold (various flavors of high end cast stainless steels) and the wall thickness of that material. Just didn't want folks thinking that a glowing header always means some sort of combusiton problem, even if it does not related directly to Uly's. I would be concerned if my headers glowed. |

Respectfully, I think the question was "what's up with this?', not can you make a header glow...of course you can but no way should it in this instance And your comparison was kinda apples to oranges, what with cars, turbos, gas,etc. We're talking air cooled normally aspirated at idle. "Its all about the temp". Which is hotter, cooling exhaust gases or a still propagating flame front? I assure you, he has a fuel/air charge still burning as the exhaust valve opens, and it should have been completed in the cylinder. These are easier to skim....notice that the temp as the valve opens is darned near the ignition temp
