I'm trying to get the front pulley off as the final stage of chain drive conversion. I know its a lefthand thread, but I cant get the nut to budge!!!! Any thoughts ???? |

Mark: Have you tried slipping a piece of 2x4 lumber or a padded length of pipe through the rear wheel to hold it while you heave on the wrench? That's worked for me in the past. If you have an impact wrench, that would almost certainly knock it loose. I'd be a little cautious applying heat to the sprocket--seems like there might be rubber seals nearby that could get cooked if you got it too hot. r-t |

Mark, You will need to keep the rear wheel fron moving so the 2x4 is a good idea. But even then it might not budge without a little heat. I had to use a propane torch to get mine to let loose due to the thread lock on it. Just heat it on the nut not the shaft and you should be okay. Be careful not to overheat it. |

Impact gun. Or use the sproket holder tool. |

LOL...I seem to recall wrapping a broken belt around MJs sprocket and frame and tthen holding on for dear life waiting for that fricking impact gun to loosen it up. Just takes some time. |

Do not use an Impact, it could seriously damage the crank shaft since it is a multi piece. The best bet is to use the Buell special tool to hold the pulley and a really big breaker bar. If not the 2x4 sounds good. Don't use the impact. Later, Morgan |

Morgan, the service manual says to use an impact gun. He is talking about the pulley at the transmission also and not the pulley on the crankshaft. |

What type of threadlock is on the pulley? There is a type of red that requires heat to break it loose. Careful with that blow torch Eugene. |

Damn, Hoot, you aren't old enough to remember that stuff!! I'm envisioning several old greasy motorcycles in a garage, grooving with a thing. r-t |

For want of the price of a Buell belt drive, the hootowl will not ride. I grew up on Pink. |

Maybe I'll throw in an interstellar overdrive while I'm changing the belt. Should be good for a couple of hundred more miles per hour. |

I've got a bike. You can ride it if you like. It's got a basket, a bell that rings and Things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

Mark, Air impact driver is the safest most reliable method and will protect the bearings. Whatever you do, do NOT use the "hammer on a breaker bar" method, doing so will jeopardize the integrity of the output shaft bearing. |

RT, As far as I know, all the XL1200 based Buells use the same Sportster belt, so I think it would fit. I won't be able to ride this weekend anyway. I'll have my kids. My new one should be here sometime next week though. ...The belt is the same in a relative way but it's older, shorter of strength, and one day closer to breaking. |

Mark, I would try a little heat, a little WD-40 and then a few zips with the impact gun as Blake suggests. Don't over do it though. If a second or two with the impact gun doesn't budge it, try something else to loosen it up, like heat or WD40. Overzealous impact gun use can damage stuff. |

i have made many changes to the final drive on my '98 sportster. each time i use a 1/2 super duty pneumatic impact wrench, and have to rattle on the nut for at least 30 seconds to break it loose. i use red loctite on it. it goes back on real tight. it is a torque plus third of a turn deal, so it is DAMN tight. i think the tuber buells are the same deal. |

The heat should break up the red locktite so you shouldn't have to use the gun for so long. You can shear parts with those things if you're not careful. Maybe 1-2 seconds is a little low. I guess I'm over-cautious. |

I've used an crappy electric impact wrench that rattles away for five minutes or more. Its not as forceful as an air one but not as violent either. (I'd go for the violence but I haven't a compressor.) These should be available at a tool rental place. |

Thanks for all the advce. In the end I went to my Local H-D/Buell dealer who applied the air impact wrench and 5 seconds later the nut was off. Next problem is a spacer for the difference between the pulley and sprocket size!!!! This has cost me a day at the races. Thanks again Mark |
