Ok, I have an XB12S and a buddy asked me about the Triumph speed Triple as a comparison, he's heard great things about it (at least nothing bad). can anyone help with this? I've reviewed it and it looks like a sweet bike, lots of aftermarket parts for it. A little heavier. I'm not sure about service support for it though. It puts out a little more power as well. Not sure about how it compares handling wise... supposed to be reliable over the long haul though from our research. Anyway, any input in the form of a comparison or otherwise... good, bad or indifferent would be great. Thanks. | ||

The speed triple is one of the bikes I was looking at before I bought my 9S. I wanna say it puts out around 116 HP, it gets raves about its motor. I actually saw a picture of the newest model in a magazine. Didn't look like it had many design changes, but it was totally blacked out, black body work, frame, rims, etc. It really looked wicked. If there had been a Triumph dealer in Tucson I may not my XB! There are a lot of similarities in what I was looking for in a bike...distinct badass looks, unique motor with a unique sound, excellent handling, and not yer everday crotch rocket! The Speed was more than my 9 which made it a bit easier ( the 12 didn't exist yet...that still burns me it came out about a month later!  but that's another rant!). The choice between a 12 and the Triple may be tougher. Nice problem to have! | ||

Thanks for the responses so far. I think the triple triple is now less than the 12 and the same as the 9. (under 9000). He likes the belt and the under slung exhaust of my baby and the motor and rear seat of the triple. Has anyone ridden the triple? I can't imagine it handling better than my 12 (maybe as good?). Tucson, you mentioned something about dealers I rarely see them around for triumph. Good thing there's no shortage of Harley dealers! What are the service options for the triumph? Can it go to another center.. say a BMW shop or something? I know.. stupid question. haha. Thanks again. | ||

Hmmmm.. well, I'd never trade my Buell. We have a relationship and I understand it. If my friend gets the Triple... I may try it and get one but not trade. | ||

I traded in my 98 Speed III for a 03 XB9S. Both bike are great in their own ways & looks. The sound of the III with the factory high pipe AHHHH. I love them both equally, wish I can own both. You should take both for a test ride first. | ||

I can't imagine that the triple handles as well (especially after a tire change), but I've heard good things about the engine. Not real good fuel mileage though. I think for me it would come down to the fact that the XB has a "Harley" engine and that it's VERY easy to work on. I like torque too... I don't think the triple would hold a candle on a twisty road. What's the warranty like on the triple? Dealer support? Ease of self service? Insurance rates? I don't personally care too much for the look of them either but that's just me... | ||

M1...good concept. I liken Buells and Harley Davidsons to the old VW Bug from an aftermarket perspective. Definitely not performance, so don't flame me on that one. Quite simply, no matter how old it gets, you can always find a source of economical replacement parts and upgrades without having to own a machine shop. This in itself should sway many more riders to HD/BMC. Especially if they are looking at a bike purchase as a long term investment or love affair. | ||

so wouldnt a dual sport, stroker blast with some suspesion travel be a cool bike? about 600cc, around 8 inches of suspension travel, 6gallons of fuel, chain drive. AIR COOLED. i would buy one | ||

No, we postponed the delivery until this Friday. It would have been a three hour trip each way and we were to head out at 7:00... I'm not in a hurry. I need to rebuild the head when I get it too. It'll probably be a while. I'm having PLENTY of fun with the 12R anyway  . | ||

Perhaps in Alaska, but in the deserts of CA, I loved it. Mine kept on running hard while others were either cooling down or being hauled in for head work. IMHO...YMMV | ||

I agree with the bug connection, the engines are remarkably similar technology. What amazed me (when I got deep into a bug engine helping out a buddy) was how much MORE advanced that sportster engine was. No valve adjustments for one thing. Everywhere I looked, I saw a weak alternative to what my Harley engine had. It really suprised me, I was expecting the opposite. And the original bug did make like 27 hp, but hopped up ones can push 200 horses as I understand. The original sportster engine made 40 horses, and hopped up versions can make upwards of 150. So I think the analogy holds. That being said, I was glad when the buddy sold the bug All the work and none of the fun of my Cyclone. I told him to sell it and go buy a KLR-650...} |
