Hey guys, i have been having some hard start issues on my 01 buell, about a week ago das boot popped off leaving work, so i pushed it backinto the shop and reattached das boot, but from day one the bike was hard to start cold. If i spray das boot with carb cleaner it drops rpms and dies sometimes. now my question is, is that das boot or is small amount of overspray going through air intake.

Also to note: If i hold throttle open 1/8 and hold starter it will take a bit to start and it will pop and eventually come to idle then runs great, if it sits for a while it hard to start again, this points me towards the AR, any ideas?

It would seem you have an intake leak somewhere (but it would depend on exactly where you are spraying the carb cleaner too).

Check the vacuum nipple cap to see if it is still good. IF you have one (some carbs the nipple is blocked or non existent), the cap tends to crack and split over time.

Did you pull the boot off and check it? They can look good, but pull it off and you'll find the split (Murphy's law says the split will be on the opposite side of where you can see).

Replace the slow/pilot jet with a #45. Also drill out the idle mixture screw plug and adjust to 2 1/2 turns. The Blast comes super lean at low speed jetting and this minor mod will help a lot with starting (whether the AR is good or not). (#45 is a very common Harley jet, being stock on many bikes, so it should be readily available)

But first check the boot!

okay i will try all of that, i plan on doing the intake so ill just speed that up and do it sooner, now when you say drill out the idle screw, i assume you mean screw it all the way out then turn it 2.5 turns back into carb, and not actually drill out with a drill bit.. forgive me if this is a stupid question ive been an ase auto tech for 6 years now and any time some one states drill out i think just that. i will check the boot and let you know what i find, thank you very much

The thumbscrew is the idle mixture screw. For at least 25 years the idle mixture screw has been plugged over so it cant be adjusted. Unless it has been unplugged (drilled out) you can't adjust the idle.

The idle mixture is set by screwing all the way in (gently) and then backing it out 2 1/2 turns out. My guess is being an ASE tech for 6 years you don't see many carbs, if any, these days!!!

Thank you so much for the information, Last night on the interstate a SUV swerved to hit a cone and launched it infront my my bike, i tried to ride over it but it stuck and i wrecked doing 70. i am alive, thank god for gear! the bike is okay, though i need some new mirrors and turn signals, but it runs fine, after i picked up my bloody body i checked myself out and i rode the bike the rest of the way home. i will be posting in the other sections for suggestions on bar end mirrors and turn signals. thanks again
