just got a 2002 for what i thought was a good price, was just going to ride it a little and then sell it. i rode it a little and i love it, shes a keeper! trouble is she is making some tranny chatter, figured it was a loose primary chain (makin it sound like i figured it out on my own but i found a post here that recommended i start there)I perused the manual and got to work on it only to find the limiter screw gos all the way in without any resistance! i assume this is bad mojo? what do i do now? where do i get parts for this thing? how much trouble is this going to be if im only a little handy? why dont they sell bacon in.... |

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Rowdyripley! That adjuster thing is a little over-rated. If you happen to get a virgin unmessed with Blast...by anybody, you don't need to do anything to it...for a while. Was there a spacer in the adjuster? If there was a spacer and your 2002 Blast has low miles(1000 or less) you should be OK, just do not ride it until you get your adjustment correct. Typically what happens is at the first primary chain adjustment someone over tightens the primary chain and the problems begin, the most noticable is that the 96 MPH top end is no longer achievable due to the primary chain being too tight. I have found that the best and easiest way, though not the correct way, to adjust the primary chain is to adjust it by ear. Warm the bike up, in idle loosen the adjuster until you get a rattling noise then slowly start tightening the adjuster until the rattle goes away, when you get it too tight you will cause either the idle to go down or you will hear a whirring sound from the primary area(too tight) you want the rattling sound to go away but not have a whirring sound to it. When you achieve the perfect sound things should be good, but if you still have the "chatter" you might have a more serious problem like a loose crank shaft sprocket nut or (if the bike has been previously molested) a worn adjuster shoe from the primary chain being run too tight. The adjuster screw will run all the way in without much resistance if you are using a wrench on it because the clutch basket bearing will give causing the clutch to not want to release all the way and it could possibly cause the input shaft to deflect from the transmission centerline causing things to chatter. Long story short...readjust the primary, setting it on the loose side, but not rattling. Good luck, Let us know how it turns out... |

Welcome Rowdy! Swampy is the man! Unfortunately, if the screw does go all the way in without any resistance, Swampys right and it was probably overtightened and the shoe is toast. Not that hard to replace if you have a repair manual and can read. Does it still have the spacer (the manual has a picture of it Page 6-5, if we have the same edition)? If the spacer is still there, you wont feel any resistance. |

no spacer unfortunately, the bolt screws in by hand and when i say no resistance i really mean none, feels like im just tightening a bolt with nothing on the other side. i will try adjusting it with the bike running and my ears open and see what i can find out. the previous owner made some modifications that i am not very impressed with so it is possable that he over tightened the chain and damaged the shoe |

That can mean that the PRIMARY chain is wore out, "BUT" most probably the PLASTIC PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTER is worn out because of improperly adjusting the PRIMARY CHAIN ... It has been proven time after time the adjustment in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is "WRONG" after you adjust it you are then told to back off on the adjusting screw until the "WHINE" go's away ... If you want a copy of this HELP "INFO"(PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTMENT Class 101), just PM me ... |

If bolts goes all the way in without resistance the shoe is probably toast. Typically, there is about 3/8" between the bolt head and adjuster nut (the threaded portion of the bolt) when its adjusted right, after its broken in. |

Unless you have a Buell dealer locally, you will not be able to get the parts at a HD store. Precision hd is a forum sponsor and should be able to get you the adjuster shoe, chain guides, primary gasket, shift shaft gasket, parts manual, service manual, and 2 carb boots (1 to replace now and a back up). http://www.precisionhd.com/ |

Just took off the primary cover to my Blast and found I had a similar problem. Here is a link to some pictures: http://dasl.mem.drexel.edu/~joshGeating/?page_id=6 25 The shoe is pretty much totally disintegrated. I am wondering if I need a new spring and pin as well. If you look at the pictures on the bottom of the page, and looks like the spring tab is totally broken or worn off, and I have no idea what the pin is supposed to look like. If so, I have no idea how to find and order these parts. The service manual just refers to them as the "spring", "pin", and "shoe". Also, I couldn't find a new gasket either. This is the only part I was able to find: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-2009-Buell-P3-Blast-500-Motorcycle-Engine-Primary-Chain-Guide-Slider-OEM-/300943670899?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4611a3fe73&vxp=mtr (Message edited by jgeating on August 02, 2013) |

Order by part number from a dealer. The gasket is also available from American Sport Bike. Bike Bandit no longer lists Buell OEM Shoe, chain adjuster: 39922-00Y Spring: 24349-00Y Pin: 24350-00Y Gasket: 25352-00YA The pin may be hard to come by and I cant tell from the pictures if it is damaged. Some dealers sell online, some dont. Chicago Harley used to be real easy, but not anymore. Also try a badweb Sponsor: http://www.precisionhd.com/ I'm sure they would be glad to help if you mention you got their name from Badweb right from the start. http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/DealerLocator.aspx?z ip=07452&miles=250&ManfId=4 |

Before I got your reply gearheaderiko, I came across http://www.latus-harley-davidson.com/ and they had all the parts from searching the part numbers on Google. I couldn't find the parts manual except from a Russian site. I ordered the shoe, spring, pin, gasket (although mine didn't break, can I reuse it?), and the top guide. On another note, my belt is also rubbing against my rear pulley guard, but from what I've seen in the forum, it seems I should just wait until I see wear on the belt. It's not possible that when I remounted the engine it could have been been angled a degree or two differently? |

Use a new gasket. Don't worry about the belt rub. It's somewhat normal and there isn't any possible way to misalign the engine with the swing arm. Only bent parts can cause misalignment. |

I started this thread several years ago and never made my final report. Due to the fine advice and guidance i received here i managed to get my little rumble bee back in running order, after which i loaded her up with my possibles and took a ride out to the coast, within the 2,000ish miles there were adventures aplenty but thats a topic for another thread. No further primary chain issues were experienced and thats the relevant detail. Thanks for all your help. |
