I'm not trying to start the next air filter debate  ... I'm just curious about those of us who have K&N filters how often do you clean and oil them? I'm at about a season and a half (7-8K) since getting mine and it looks OK, but this is also the first serviceable air filter I've ever had. I would appreciate the input of anyone who's had one for a little while. Thanks a lot. | ||

I am interested in this also. Another question I have is how much oil to apply to the washed filter? I have not bought a K&N yet because I am waiting to have enough for the EBR ECM, Drummer and K&N package so I can install everything together. ALMOST THERE!! | ||

Depends on how dusty it is where you live. Mine usually make it a full season, my truck probably averages 12-15k a year and I do it every spring. | ||

Thanks D. It's not that dusty here ... suburbs of Cincy. I'm probably OK for now, but I'll put it on my list for the next time I've got things pulled off. | ||

I've done mine about every other oil change too. I've read that supposedly these actually filter better when just a bit dirty. Of course they supposedly don't filter as well as paper. It does depend on your conditions though. Another question I have is how much oil to apply to the washed filter? Just enough that it will turn the entire filter red AFTER it soaks in. You are better off letting it soak in and have to touch up light areas than to have it blowing oil down the intake. | ||

Thanks for the other thoughts as well. Maybe I am behind on servicing mine. I'll go ahead and pick up the kit and clean and oil it the next time I'm actually home over a weekend. | ||

I have cleaned K&N's win a shallow pan with gasoline (carefully) and with engine degreaser, then water. Cheaper than the official kit. | ||

I look at the element from time to time. If it's not clean pink, time to do it up. In reality, I ran all last year checking each oil change and it still looked clean in the spring. I just cleaned and re-oiled it because I could. I thing the fake fuel tank airbox does a pretty good job keeping the worst stuff out. My X1 with a forcewinder needs cleaning and oiling every oil change. | ||

Like oil there is no way to know if its dirty unless you test it,air filters work best when they are dirty on the outside,and the way to tell if their dirty is if they pull to much restriction on a vacuum gage (air filter restriction gage).I will also add that on large trucks and equipment air filter service is extended as long as possible because the possibility of debris getting into the intake tract from filter change is very likely. I suspect most of us change our filters or clean them way before they need it,just make sure the area around is clean as you can get it before removing the old filter | ||

The official service interval from K&N is 50,000 miles. Says so in the cleaning instructions. http://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm No I havn't brought myself to go that long. I probably do it at about 15,000 miles. | ||

Wow ... 50k, I knew there was a reason I needed to learn how to read ... making fun of myself because I've honestly (& obviously) never read the documentation from the manufacturer. I swear I'm usually much better about that. All I knew is that my MPG was crap compared to what it was. While messing with all my other stuff I changed the plugs& wires& sure enough last fillup I got 47 without trying. I'm sure it's probably not a bad thing to also go ahead& service my filter but that wasn't the issue. I'll just do that because I care thanks for all the input. |
