I had a leaking right leg in my 98 S1W, found a brand new set of Showas on ebay for 250.00 with free shipping from a HD store, they fit right in no issues... |

Was the 98 the same as the 96? Rims axles etc worked still? |

Pretty sure the 96 and 98 are the same - both are the later WP forks, not Romas. Wheels are interchangeable for sure, between those, WP Romas, and the -99 up Showas. I can compare axles tomorrow unless someone knows off of the top of their head. Brake calipers interchange for sure. |

Ok so what is better with the X1 showas? The issue I am having is my forks continue to leak or well weap been rebuilt 3 times and I am confident it was done right. But they do not have the greatest response either. |

I think the Showa's are better because they have rebound and dampening on each leg. The WP's the rebound is on one and dampening is on the other. I like the finish on the X1 legs better and parts should be a bit easier to get. The X1 legs were a straight swap. |

Now that I think about it, I posed a similar question earlier as well, and I think Greg_cifu had the best response... "Performance wise: I have three Roma-forked bikes, one Showa and one 1998 WP. It may be placebo effect and some may be setup better than others. I like the Romas. The finish and the ride is very nice. As much as I hate to admit, I think the Showas are number two. They are finished more nicely than the later WPs and seem to be as stiction-free as the Romas. My 1998 WPs are freshly charged with oil and were carefully measured for oil level. They seem to have a bit more stiction than the Showa so small ripple bumps transmit more readily to the bars. " Of course the reference to the ROMAS does not apply hear. |

Ken, check the knowledge vault on fork seals. I posted about leak proof seals. They seem to be what the name claims. I bought my M2 with leaky seals and had a set of these put in. 11000 miles and counting with no leaks. |

I like the forks on my '00 X1 better than the ones on my '96 S1, for sure, at lease as they are now. The S1 forks seem to ride harsher and dive more under braking. They probably need a rebuild, for sure. |
