Well its been over a year, but I thought I would follow up on my post. Sorry it has taken so long, but I did not get the bike back until late May. I`ve been seeing people with the same or similar problem posting too, so I wanted to tell all the route I took. I went with an `08 crank, rods, and bearings provided by Darkhorse. They trued and welded the new crank assembly. I bought a `07 oil pump, which is better than the `06. The lifters were taken apart and cleaned. The swingarm was flushed, and about 3 or 4 oil and filter changes were done before it was really ridden, to be totally sure all the sintered metal was gone. While apart I installed one of Tootal`s throttle shafts. I had a slight problem, but he was a huge help, and I fixed it quick. He is a great guy, and huge asset to this forum. I also installed a new belt, and keeping the used (12K miles) as a spare. The new belt makes some creaking noises, and its real tight, but I`m hoping it`s just breaking in. I removed the fuel pump, and sure enough, the wires were abraded, so I fixed that. I did a TPS reset, and set the timing using the "feel" method. I believe a mark was made on the new flywheel. It runs great, no pinging. I`ve put over 1300 miles on it so far, and all is well. I too did not know what to do, did not want to break up the bike for parts, but now I have way too much $ into this bike. Oh well looks like I`m keeping it forever. At least I have hopefully fixed most of the quirks. I think I`m going to get the 2010 rear wheel, just to ease my mind further, and while I`ve gone this far, the `08 triple trees may be a winter project too. More steering lock would really be nice. I have to relocate the ECM too. I wish all with similar problems good luck, and I hope I have maybe helped some. This forum is a huge help. Attached is a pict of the oil pump drive gear, ugly.

Wow, that gear is mess up. Glad to hear you are back on the road and sounds like your bike will be a lot more reliable. |

Thanks for posting the followup! That looks like an updated pinion gear... So did that start the problem? Or was it a result of the crank failure (maybe causing a broken piston skirt to get ingested into the oil pump)? I don't recall the details of the previous thread... |

Ouch! The way the teeth are broken does not look like they typical failed oil pump drive gear seen on earlier Buells prior to the introduction of the bronze gear like this one. A few of the teeth on the older gears would occasionally wear to thin knife edges and eventually break off, resulting in loss of oil pressure. The broken pieces would sometimes fowl the cam gears too. On your bike, I'd guess a chunk of something got into the oil pump and locked it solid at speed, causing the mostly unworn gear teeth to shear off. Wow. At any rate, glad you got it fixed. |

Thanks guys. Here is the link to the first post, sorry I did not include it. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/683850.html I don`t think no teeth were found just filings. I did get kind of "lucky" as it could of been worse. Funny, I don`t feel lucky! |

Got it, so it was a crank issue. Well, now it's sorted, and you have a great bike. Still cheaper than a BMW GSA. Thanks for the followup! I wondered how it went. |

Not much, if any cheaper. I bought it new. But I like my Uly more than a GS. Looks like I am a Uly "lifer"! I'll be on this forum a looong time. Not a bad thing though. I just hate the lack of dealer support, especially when touring. (Message edited by motorfish on July 03, 2013) |

Well, cheaper than a GSA with a bad crank then. Or bad final drive. And much cheaper than a GSA with a bad final drive if you didn't put the fire out before it spread to your luggage. We will see if I am as good a sport about it when it happens to me... |

Holy smoking shaft!!! Yeah, Reep I would not want to do what I did on a GSA!!! And replacing a belt is much easier and cheaper than that flaming mess! Plus carrying a spare belt means a possible roadside repair. I'll quit moaning about my Money Pit. I forgot to mention that I also had my muffler ceramic coated while apart. Guess I just HAVE to get a 2010 rear wheel, I've done just about everything else!! Hahaaa oh well. |

You earned the right to moan a little Fish, I'll moan too when and if mine goes. |

I wonder what the weight difference is between the Uly belt and sprockets compared to the BMW shaft drive setup. It has got to be quite a bit. |

I hope you remain in the non-moaners group, Reep! I don`t know what a shaft drive setup weighs, but I would not want to carry a spare!!! While I`ve been listing all my upgrades, has anyone ever heard of the upgraded 77 connectors failing? I upgraded a long time ago, and used some electrical connection compound on it, with no problems. OOps I guess that's a little off topic. |

Just to follow up... "moan. And whine a little." I'm pretty much resigned to the fact my 07 crank if failing. Thanks for taking the time to post all the information you did so I can decide what to do with mine. |
