My '09 XB12X has run flawlessly for 6,000 miles. I just rode it all morning. It sat for an hour, then I rode it up the road one mile. Everything A-OK. Half an hour later I hit the starter, it fires and dies. I restart it but it feels like it's running on one cylinder. I limp it home and let it sit a half hour. Same thing. Both pipes have heat so I would think that neither cylinder is completely dead but it sure feels and sounds like it. Thoughts? |

Have you checked you battery connections? They can wiggle loose and give a similar symptom. |

Thanks Redponcho. I just went out ant took the connections apart and wire brushed them. (The bike and the connections are extremely clean.) No difference. It was cooled down to maybe 100 degrees. I tapped the pipes and the front one got hot and the rear also got hot but less than the front. Huge raw gas smell too. |

Fouled plugs? Don't the 09's have some magic sequence of things you can do to unfoul plugs? Or just replace them. |

2008 XB and 1125R - has the ability to clear residual fuel from the combustion chamber if a flooded engine or fouled spark plugs are suspected. This is achieved by opening the throttle to wide open, setting the Run/Stop switch to Run then, turning the ignition switch ON. This will fire the spark plugs for approximately 4 seconds, burning any fuel left over in the combustion chamber. It may be necessary to repeat this procedure several times to allow a severely flooded engine to start. |

I think I got that from bad web couple years ago. It works |

Or the head temp sensor. Do you have ECMSpy and the cable to work with it? (Although, I can't remember if ECMSpy works with the 09 ECM or not. Now that I really think about it. I think the 09 was the DDFI3 which doesn't work...) |

The HD 10R12X plugs look black and sooty. The nearest HD dealer is 50 miles from here. I'll cross reference that PN and see what else I can get to replace them. Hopefully it cures it. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will post back tomorrow with a report on how it went. |

It is almost certainly the rear cylinder head temp sensor that is playing up. The only option is to change it. If you want to try some decent plugs get NGK EIX9 iridiums. They won't foul up like the H-D plugs do. |

For plugs. Just to save you a trip. Auto Zone, Advance, etc carry NGK or Champion plugs. If you go to NGK's site you can get the part number. Just give it to them and they can get you the NGK plug or cross reference another plug option. You will save some cash and time this way. |

You can probably check the rear head temp sensor with just a multimeter, I believe it is just a resistive element. Somebody has probably posted typical values. If my spare head still has a sensor in it, I can ping it out this weekend. |

Trojan, maybe the plugs numbering is different in the UK for NGK. What I got for his XB number that he needs is: Standard Plug: DCPR8E Stock #: 4179 Iridium Plug: DCPR8EIX Stock #: 6546 |

Well, after 71,000miles my bike was running rough, hard to start, acting like it cut off then back on again, all intermittently. Turns out the plug wires had gone bad and were shorting out. Easiest test is to go in the garage with the lights off and fire the bike up. It'll be obvious if you need new ones. Try this and other easy/cheap stuff first. Best of luck! |

Well, it turned out to be simple, stupid (like me). I had Autozone order a set of NGK DCPR8EIX plugs. They came in this morning and I just put them in. Runs like new again. I've had plug wires do that to me before where they worked perfect one day and like crap the next, but never plugs. Thanks to all that responded. This forum is pretty damn good. |

Brumbear, My lodge is 4-5 hours from Lake Placid. I'm in the Bristol Hills near the center of the Finger Lakes. It's much more of a place where a family will rent it for a week and explore our area. |
