So I'm riding my M2 to Sturgis this August, my bud and I where discussing different way we should lock out bikes when we are traveling. I'm going to pick up one of the Kryptonite ny chain lock to secure the bike. I also have been thinking of a dick lock with a built in alarm. I have tried a few on my M2 but none of them really seem to fit, mostly they hit the rim and cause it to not be able to slide on. Does anybody have a disc lock suggestion that they use? And help would be greatly appreciated Thanks |

You were right the first time. http://grammarist.com/spelling/disc-disk/ But you definitely should have used "too". |

Maybe if you can't keep it in your pants you need a dick lock too! Wife or sig. other will have to hold the key though I only ever lock my forks so I can't offer any advice on disc locks, but if you DO need the dick lock...nevermind (Message edited by Blackm2 on June 27, 2013) |

Ive used a disk lock on my x1, may still even have it and I can get a photo to show you what I was using. not an alarm model. hoever...very painful story about the first time I ever used it....and forgot...and I put it in front of the fork leg instead of behind the fork leg so that I had almost a full wheel rotation before coming to an abrupt stop...couldnt figure out how to keep from falling, deal with the shock while my brain processed WTF just happened and not throw up all over my bike..... |

Been to sturgis a few times on a bike - standard lock worked fine BUT since youre worried (and there are a lot of bikes stolen there) I say a disc lock is a great idea Lakes - youre not going to see much of any place if you have to stay within eyesight of your bike |

Yep. If you're going to use a disc lock, try attaching a stretchy band of some kind between the lock and a blank ignition key. Put the key blank in the ignition as a reminder to unlock the disc. |

You don't need to lock it other than taking the ignition key. You could use the fork lock if you are paranoid. There are so many bikes and people around at Sturgis, I can't imagine anyone loading a bike into a truck to take it. IMHO, the only thing folks are interested in there are the chrome barges. I've ridden my S3T to Sturgis 6 times, parked at bars, campgrounds, downtown streets, and concerts. The biggest problem I ever had was my full face helmet getting filled with water during a thunder storm. Don't leave your helmet hanging on the bars . Barry |

but its a 'Modern Classic'... seriously, wasn't there a show on tv about how Kryptonic locks were getting shattered somehow by freezing it with a can of something? Not sure I'd trust that. My favorite is the braided cable, that drapes like a rope. Heavy, but only need it long enough to lock a wheel to the frame somewhere. (Message edited by jayvee on June 27, 2013) |

If you're not used to having your bike locked up with a lock on the disk, be sure to get one of those retractable twisty cable things that hook to it and remind you not to attempt to ride off into the sunset (or anywhere) with it still on. The abruptness with which your bike and you end up upside down in a heap in the middle of the road is not even describable. Depending on where on the disk (disc? or maybe you were right in the first post and saying "dick") you can get up to 3 whole feet of forward motion before "WHAM" - you are ass over teakettle. I'd rather have some lowlife steal my bike than have to endure the shame and embarrassment that whole scene entails. No more disk locks for me. Take it from someone who has experienced this, shamefully more than once! Apparently, I'm not really smart enough to recall placing a lock on my disc, just a mere hour or 2 prior. Your results may vary. If Sturgis is anything like most large gatherings of H-D riders (I've never attended) the majority of the apehanger crowd won't even know what the hell your M2 even is, much less try to abscond with it. Lock your bike to your bud's overnight and party on - it's probably gonna be as safe as it can be. |

"Lock your bike to your bud's overnight" Definitely do that. If you just lock your forks, disk, etc. all it takes is a few guys to pick it up and put it in a truck. That was being done in the City Park at Sturgis when I attended in 1971. Bikes with the forks locked were picked up and hauled away so quickly that they seemed to vanish into thin air. I like the braided cables and I try to lock the bike to a pole or other immovable object. The braided cables have a loop on each end so you can put the cable around a frame member and then pull one end through the loop on the other end. That will give you greater free length to attach to your friend's bike or a pole. |

+1 on locking together. I lock to my buddy's FXR that has a security system. If his moves the alarm goes off. I figure if I'm locked to his that's good enough. BUT, whenever I'm out on my own I just use the fork lock. |

Disc locks work well enough for short term; I have one with a neon orange coil-cord that wraps around the throttle grip as a "hey dummy" reminder. If you're super-paranoid...get a coated cable lock and a stout padlock. Lock your bike to your buddy's bike. A few guys can lift one bike quickly into a truck. Locked with a cable to another bike/anchor? They move to the next. My theory is, though...if I'm that worried about my bike getting swiped, I must be at the wrong event. |

The bike thieves that work the rallies are pro's. Professional bike thieves have tow trucks and vans with booms installed. I worked at the Sturgis Rally every year for about a decade, every year there would be a rash of thefts, it always seemed to be the same story...Pros with trucks picking off bikes left parked. Daytona was worse (I think because of the proximity of the port). I won't use a disk lock for the same reason Leftcoastal raises - since it isn't part of my normal routine, I know I would forget it's on there at and try to take off with it still locked. My solution was a hunk of chain and a good American mushroom tumbler padlock. If you're going to Sturgis, man, be careful. I wouldn't worry about the bike thieves as much as I'd worry about getting involved in a wreck through no fault of your own. There are literally tens of thousands of HD riders there, many of whom trailered their bikes in behind their giant motorhome/toy hauler and have almost no actual riding experience. Then they go out and try to handle some great twisties out in the canyons. Multi-bike wrecks from some bozo crossing the yellow line on a curve and plowing into a group of riders coming the other way are far too common - I literally saw that multiple times every day my last time up there. That was about 10 years ago but I cannot imagine it's any better. Enormous police presence and a town that has built it's economy around taking as much money from the out of towners the rally brings that week. If you go out to actually ride, say Spearfish Canyon, you'll end up stuck behind Fat Boys on Fat Boys. Screw that noise. It's pretty country, but I'd visit it any week but that one. My $.02 Still, I guess everyone should see it - just don't ride near the guy with the new leathers... (Message edited by Lynrd on June 29, 2013) |

...and the post above is the reason I avoid Rolling Thunder every year. I love and support our military and everything they do for us...but you can't pay me to get in a group with those "riders". I went to Daytona once. That was more than enough. I'll stick to events like Buelltoberfest, and the now-defunct WVBR. Events where you not only don't have to lock your bike down...you don't even have to take the keys out of the ignition. And you can actually RIDE |
