Went for a ride this evening, just got the bike off the back of the truck. Riding at about 55mph engine suddenly cut out, coasted to a stop. Electrics work, lights, signals, dash, horn. I flip the ignition switch to on... Nothing. I thumb the starter... Obviously nothing. 2000 X1 Lightning. Stock ECM. Visible connections to the ECM are tight, clean, and dry. What happened? Chime in guys. Cheers. Now where did I put that service manual... |

Maybe check the kickstand switch...couldn't be that simple. |

Try starting with the clutch pulled in. Aside from fuses and relays, obvious possibilities are clutch, kickstand, and ignition switches. All are easy to rule out one at a time. |

+1 with these guys. Jumper the clutch, then sidestand switch. Two most likely culprits. Mine are removed, dont need that headache and stick to tripple checking the stand is up. |

Have you checked your fuses? |

Clutch & sidestand switches were removed some years ago. The sun is up. Gonna check fuses, gotta buy a multi-meter to check relays & diodes. I'll report back. |

That sounds remarkably familiar. Disconnect your speedo sensor, replace the ignition fuse, and try again. |

Check how you removed them... bad crimp / cracked solder connection could do it. It's hard to make those durable over the long term. |

Blown ignition fuse. No spares on board. Fail. But the girl @ Harbor Freight was a sweetheart. The multimeter was free. Yay! Thanks & Cheers. |

sounds like what happened to me last year.. check the ground wire under the seat.... my wire broke at the terminal and it just shut down on me.... if I remember correctly, the headlights and everything still worked..... (Message edited by purpony on June 26, 2013) |

must be a reason for the fuse to blow, don't dance the happy dance just yet.. |

Didn't we have some speedo sensor failures that blew fuses as well. Was that the ignition fuse, or another one? |

Yes, hence my suggestion that he disconnect the speed sensor prior to replacing the ignition fuse. |

That was a great suggestion then! (I shoulda scrolled up... ) |

I acquired that knowledge at great personal expense. Sucks to be stranded and at the mercy of a dealer and their incompetent technicians. |

Well, cleaned up the fuse block with some electrical contact cleaner. Pushed in some new fuses. Started up and ran like a top. Interesting suggestions. Looks like the fuse blowing could be related to multiple reasons. It's quite grimy in the underseat compartment. It would appear the primary is puking a bit in there, someone brought it to my attention recently sighting oil on the tail by my right leg, as I have the crankcase vented there as well I passed it off as a regular episode of bulimia. But the amount of wet build up on the inside is pretty excessive. Also I had crammed a layer of clothing in there from just over the weekend, I'm realizing my fuse box doesn't have a cover and the fuses/box may have shifted and may have succumbed to vibrating against a hard part? Not sure? I'm curious about the speedo sensor suggestion. The time line seems vague 2008/2009. But I've replaced the speedo sensor before, just after a track day when the speedo went kaput. Incidentally I had just removed the kickstand & clutch switches (one after the other or at the same time, I don't remember) for the purpose of the track day. And popped a pair of fuses in the process... Related? |

Yes, if you ate one speedo sensor, and just popped in a replacement one, the replacement one was probably doomed as well. If you replace it again, change the V+ for the speedo sensor to be the same V+ that feeds the cam position sensor, that one is regulated. I think that's the best fix these days. Just stub off the old V+ for the speedo sensor. You can leave the grounds alone. And look at your previous bypasses. Even if you do a really good job of your bypasses, entropy is relentless in getting in there and messing with stuff. Makes me really respect manufacturers and how durable they make wires and connectors. |

As another speed sensor failure/blown fuse person, a bit about what happened. The IGN fuse blew. A new fuse, and all accessories worked; the new fuse would blow as soon as the Stop/Run switch was moved to Run. Much investigation and a small pile of fuses later, the problem was tracked down to the speed sensor. The sensor 5V power wire had shorted to the sensor ground wire, right where the wire harness enters the speed sensor. Direct short to ground basically, which blows the IGN fuse. Hope this helps, Dave |

"The IGN fuse blew. A new fuse, and all accessories worked; the new fuse would blow as soon as the Stop/Run switch was moved to Run." Deja vu all over again. |

I'm going thru the exact same thing....except I disconnected my speedo sensor and it still did it.. Looking forward to hear if you have gotten it worked out... |

Outside of the contact cleaner bath and snooping around for chaffed wires which resulted in nothing, everything seems in order. I rerouted my crankcase & primary vents into one catch with a breather attached. I did a TPS reset and a 80 mile loop everything is tip-top. @Reepicheep. I'm not following the V+ 5V in regards to the speedo sensor lingo. I'll take a look at the FSM and see if I can pick up what your putting down. No issues with the speedo sensor at moment. Cheers. |
