Hi. New to the XB. Can a 12 motor be put in a xb9 frame? Any issues etc? |

Yes, in fact the XB 9 and 12 use the same frame, just a different color. The XB9 and 12 motor are nearly identical too, with the only major differences being the pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, and primary chain. The cases, heads, cylinders, transmission, and virtually every thing else mechanical is the same. |

I'm assuming you can ALSO get an ECU for your 12 motor. The ECU from the 9 won't safely run a 12. You can reprogram (search ECMSpy) |

Are the injectors the same? |

Yes , we are planning on reprogramming the 9 ecm so we can eliminate the exhaust valve. |

I've thought about this too. Is the wire harness plug and play, aside from doing something about the muffler valve electronics? I have a 2003 XB9S |

BTW, I have pulled the engine, and the manual is great, makes it easy. |

Spatten1, the answer is yes or no depending on what year the harness is, and what year the motor is. 03-05 XB9 motors had DDFI1, 04-07 XB12 and 06-07 had DDFI2, then all 08+ had DDFI3. You would need a matching harness for the right FI system, but yes you could use the 12 harness on the 9 and just not hook up the muffler valve. |

Froggy, So my 9 harness with a 12 ecm will not run a 12 motor? Do I need a 12 harness? That would make the project much more difficult. Thanks, Scott |

I don't know what years your harness, ecm, and motor are, so I don't know. If they are all from the same year 06 and up, they will work (without the muffler valve). 05 and lower it really depends. You could use an 03 xb9 harness, ecm, and the rest of the fuel injection system but you would need to remap the ECM, timing, lower redline, and possibly some other tweaks. |

So I can use my '03 harness, install a 12 engine, and just get the ECM remapped? That would be easy enough. Any restrictions on what year 12 engines I can use? BTW, I have one of the original Buell Race ECMs that does not say "race" on it but the numbers indicate what it is. |

The motor is in and runs fine so far. Used an extra 9 ecm and installed a stock 12 map with ecmspy. First ride tonight, some fine tuning required. Spits and coughs a bit just off idle but smooths out. Haven't gone far enough to change the afv. More info to come and probably some questions too. |

I'd think you'd be better off using the stock 12 ECM with a servo eliminator kit and messing with the maps there, rather then trying to turn a 9 ECM into a 12 ECM. But I don't know, maybe they are very similar. The servo really does help the bike run better... you could also just leave it in there. |

We will probably head down that road. We will be modding a 12 muffler for a little more noise and hopefully some power gain. Any easy servo eliminator fixes without paying $$. |

Just disconnect the cable, leaving the servo in place. |

Or turn it off using ECMSpy. |
