The engine is a sportster - so here is a lot of go fast stuff on the market. You can get very good performance with stock displacement, and more with more displacement.

Getting more air into the engine, and getting the exhaust to move out faster is what you are going for. A set of Thunderstorm heads or XB heads (with motor mount) set up for better cams is a tried and true formula. My 95 S2 has that basic trip done, plus a slightly larger 42mm Mikuni carb and a Buell Race exhaust - all the go-fast I need. (She used to turn 12s at the drag strip). She has the SE 575 cams.

http://www.nrhsperformance.com is a board sponsor, and they sell a lot of go-fast.

Now, here is a trick that I stole from a pretty famous engine tuner - tune the engine to make maximum power at the shift recovery point for how you ride. If you believe, as some do, that the rev-limiter is actually a shift indicator, you'll tune for about 4500 RPMs. If you ride like a grandpa on a FLHTCEIEIO Road Barge, tuning for 2000 RPMs makes sense.

This will dictate what cams you select, and, if you start playing with RAM tuning at all, how you set up your intake and exhaust.

Lynrd I don't know what your experience is with NHRS but they are not the same company they used to be. When Aaron sold the company several years ago he split it into two: one guy got the machine shop and another guy got the retail store front and website. The machine shop guy continued doing the heads and such for the retail guy but eventually got pissed at him and went and started his own retail company which I won't mention here because there not a sponsor. The guy who owns the NHRS retail company had to bring up his own machine shop and before that he never ported a set of heads in his life. So the current NHRS has only been porting heads for about a year now and have a lot of mediocre results and all the good dynos on their web site are old from when someone else did the heads which seems like false advertising to me. I would avoid them at all costs.

Are they a sponsor here now cause there not in the list. I know the NHRS guy got banned a couple times for peddling his stuff here without sponsoring and I know he asked once to be a sponsor but Blake told him no because he didn't meet the standards. I know he also got banned twice from HDforums for doing the same thing spamming the board without paying for sponsorship.

If you want good performance work look at Cycle Rama there a board sponsor with an impeccable reputation.

Wow =-thanks for the heads up. I have no experience with them other than a very helpful conversation I had that helped me workout one of my wacky ideas.

The shop I personally use is in Hayward, Ca. They are not a board sponsor either. but they've been doing HD stuff since the 50s - and are a father -son team. East Bay guys probably know the shop. I would recommend them without any hesitation for any top end work.

I've been using them for 20 years now, and some very famous east bay bike builders for far longer.

As a side note, what ARE the standards for board sponsorship?

What's funny - I have been getting banner ads for NHRS as well as the other shop when I log in here, so I ASSUME they are a sponsor. When I go to the sponsors area - neither place is listed. Of the ones that are, a few are dead links...
