2004 Blast, 8,500 mi., new air filter, fresh oil, primary just adjusted, tires good, new spark plug, I use mid-grade gas. Boot is 3 years old and has 7,000 miles on it. The bike last year would hit the rev limiter at 96mph, and it gets to 82mph ok, idles well, but it runs out of steam above 80mph and won't go faster than 86-87 mph. It used to have quite a bit of power to 90mph. I suppose the boot would be the first suspect? |

Have to use premium, the alki may demand boost as well - lol - yes, is your gas mileage better or worse? EZ |

Your primary adjustment may be too tight! You are in 5th gear?...right? |

I chased the primary , the timing , the carb, coil, scratched my head when mine did that everything was good.... except . when steady cruise state bike would drop a few hundred rpm then correct itself, top speed was down not using ethanol gas , check your wheel bearings my rears were bad |

For every "12 POUNDS" in weight that you can LIGHTEN your body or the weight of your bike you will gain ONE(1)ROLLING HORSE POWER(HP) which will covert into increased MILES PER HOUR(MPH), "PLUS" increased acceleration !!! |

Definately sounds like either the beginning of das boot, or too tight primary. EZ |

Das Boot clamps, tighten to 6 inch pounds ... Primary Chain, 3/4 inch loose on the chain tight spot ... |

thanks everyone. I changed the boot, and put in 93 octane (though it's mixed with about 3/4 gallon of mid grade. it hit 88, so it's still not where it should be. next is to try the primary chain. I asked the guy who serviced it 3 weeks ago, he said he did it to 24 inch pounds, then backed off 6-8 flats. |

More like 16 flats - lol - that is way too tight - that is why! The book has been wrong about that forever. Best method - loosen till you hear noise, then tighten till noise disappears - stop, set, enjoy. EZ |

gotcha! I did notice that sometimes when I leave a stop light, there is slack being taken up in the primary. Wouldn't that mean the primary is too loose? |

no, but may be clutch a tad loose. The primary is only too loose when it starts to make noise - lol EZ |

The slack you are experiencing when you take off from a light is coming from the transmission engaging fully |

So the tranny is engaging fully, but is that slackness something which should be or can be adjusted for? |

PROGRESS NOTE: I adjusted the primary, until I got a sound that was like a sewing machine, then loosened it til it was gone. I have run several tanks of premium through it. It will hit 88 mph now, still 8mph below what it would do when it was bone stock. 2004 Blast, 8,500 mi., new K&N air filter (intake otherwise stock), fresh oil, primary adjusted, tires good, new iridium plug, premium gas, new boot, Jardine exhaust, carb jetted to 175, the lower one remains stock, and it appears from what I have read that one should be 45 and stock is 42. There is a mild popping sound when decelerating. Now I'm out of ideas other than making the carb run richer, maybe it's a little too lean? Still too tight! Loosen till you get box of rocks sound, then tighten till sound gone, stop and set. EZ |
