a few questions regarding the air box.

I want to do the mod to widen the hole and cut the back half of the bell of my stock air intake to get better air flow.

My question is will i be forced to rejet my carb if i do this???

Also i want to take the cover that semi covers my petcock and air box hole. is that okay to do i seen it may direct my air some???

no, but a better less expensive mod in the long run is cut out all the interior walls and add a stack filter via hoseclamp to the airbox venturi you would have cut, leave the filter holding ring as well - lol. Now your breathing better, and you can still always go back to a freeer breathing stock version. I've seen stack filters last for years in that set up with regular cleaning, with the outer scoop protecting it from rocks, etc. cheap performance maintenance in the long run.

okay i think i am smelling what your stepping in, but i have a couple questions lol.

1.) what is a stack filter, is it just like a universal filter pod?
2.) what do it clap it too?
3.) i will not have to reject my carb at all correct?
4.) what is a venturi that you mentioned lol

Thanks for the help ez!

Won't have to rejet for any of the air box mods, call outerwears.com and order this Outer Wears Stack filter outerwears.com - the new part number is - " 12-1267-01 Black" - about 14 bucks with shipping - order two, one would be an emergency back up, that way you don't have to wait the few days shipping if you fubar it, and save an extra shipping charge. It is a fuel proof filter cloth, used in hospitals as well - lol - just use a 3" to 4" hose clamp - cut off excess of clamp to make taking off and on easier, and clamp it to the air-box venturi/buggle/stack that folks cut off when doing the stage 1 mod. - do not cut it - lol - Instead you would cut out all the interior walls of the airbox, deleting the stock filter, allowing maximum airflow in the stock style configuration.

Is that the same filter you would use if you decided to eliminate the airbox and switch to a velocity stack later on?

I run mine without the LHS scoop all the time, mainly because it's in the way of the reserve switch.
I have plans to cut it back a bit so switching to reserve is easier but haven't done it yet.

Yes - same filter.
The scoop is adjustable, loosen bolts, scoot it back, tighten - done.

Don't try to enlarge the intake hole of the bugle (venturi) on the stock air box if you want to keep the bugle. I had to use JB Weld plastic repair to repair/reinforce the bugle walls. I did manage to remove almost all interior walls, so along with removing the stock filter and using the Outerwear's filter on the bugle, I'm pretty happy with the results. wing}

Do those splitters in the carb really make a significant difference in performance?

As usual, I did it backwards and did the airbox mod after installing the Boyeson power x-wing. With a stock intake and exhaust, the x-wing didn't make any noticeable difference. With just this wild airbox mod, it feels like I have more low to mid range torque. I don't know if it's better than a regular splitter, but I was too lazy to make one and a Scary Fast splitter was more expen$ive.

Thanks EZ! Of course, I wouldn't have even attempted this mod without the clear directions from you and the other gurus on this board. Also, the work you did with Outerwear's made ordering the filters easy, so another thanks to you for that.

Forgot to mention for the picture of the open airbox that I also rerouted the breather hose. It kinda looks like I just chopped off the hose and plugged it with black sealant.

Uh ......the carb is round and standard for over 20 years on Harleys. . The problem is, for most people, any other air cleaner that's not specifically made for the Blast is in the way of your leg or hits the tank.
But there is that big hole behind the cylinder perfect for fitting a big ole' air filter!
