so Macy rode her 2002 s3 to town and came home complaining that it was dying at stops unless she held the rpm up. I hooked up ecmspy and reset the tps, ran diagnostics, looked for trouble codes (found none). Still was able to get the same problem sitting in the driveway. Starts fine, but dies when idling. Can use throttle to keep it running until you try to idle. Tried turning idle up but that only worked with a 2grand plus idle. When it dies, the fuel pump can be heard running to pump up pressure for a few seconds until it stops. I am guessing fuel filter? It dies like it is running out of gas. |

What was your AFV? When pump goes or filter clogs your AFV will shoot up big time! But would not hurt to hook up pressure gauge. Pressure should be about 50 and hold there IIRC. |

my x1 did that until i turned off the 02 sensor...its a long shot but it sounds like the same symptoms. |

Probably the ETS. I'll bet the plugs are fouled. |

You probably did this already but make sure you rule out any mechanical /binding type issues with the linkages and cables in and around the TB. |

This started happening suddenly. AFV is 100. ETS is new last summer. Will try disconnecting O2 sensor. She started the bike and it idled fine to warm up, then a 20 mile ride with no problem. Stopped back at the house, then right away another 18 mile ride. It started happening in the last 8 miles. At idle it just died. It would start right back up and judicious use of the throttle got her home although engaging the clutch without pulling the front wheel off the ground was a challenge. I am going to see if it does it cold this morning. |

Are your battery connections tight? Check the cam position sensor next. |

I re-read your original post. Reset your TPS and make sure the slide is totally bottomed out BEFORE you hit the reset button. |

Update- Had a chance to pull the plugs- clean. Checked all connectors- good. Reset TPS again. Checked battery cables, positive was loose a bit, battery was at 11.8v. Started up and set idle, idled until 140c and no problems. Battery was at 12.8v when checked after shutdown. On trickle charger now to see where it will kick off. My guess- loose cable was preventing proper charging on the battery leading to low voltage, which mainifested into poor or no running at low rpms when the alternator output dropped. When I can I will go for a ride and get into closed loop just to confirm that the problem is gone. Thanks for all the suggestions. Shane |
