I recently bought an 06 XB12SS and the check eng light comes on how do I read the codes?

I have a 2009 Ulysses XB12X with a check engine light coming on and off and loosing a bit of power with the high beam dimming.I checked the battery and charging system and it seems to be charging fine.Where is the data plug to try to read the codes on this bike.The fan seems to be running fine as well but have not checked exhaust valve servo yet until I see what the codes are.Do all codes store if the check engine light is not constant on?
