I am replacing the bearings in the front wheel of my 95 S2. I notice that the new spacer looks different than the spacer depicted in my S2 manual. Was this part updated? Specifically, the new spacer is smooth and does not have the lip or raised ring on the ends like the one shown in the manual. Your thoughts? | ||

If it's the same width bearing-to-bearing and it matches up with the inner races properly...it's likely just an update. Unless (and I don't know, I've never had PM's) the spacer is different from Marchesini wheels to PM wheels and your new one is for the "other" type of wheel? Chances are, though, it's just a revision from when they switched from Marchesini to Castalloy. | ||

Jon, question for you......early models had the speedo on the front wheel. later they had the speedo hooked to the tranny. I added wheels one time from the later models and there was not a stop on the wheel for the speedo. ? Just wondering if that is what the lip or raised ring is for? probably not | ||

OK, the actual spacer when removed showed not a machined lip, but two washers! The drawing in the book appears to not be very accurate. I did have some discussion with Al Lighton about the two spacers being different, but it does not appear that this has been brought up as a problem before. In any case, when we removed my existing spacer and put it side by side with my new spacer which I purchased from American Sport Bike, the existing (old) spacer was a 1/64-1/32 shorter than the new one. I think it may have been mashed a bit when the old bearings were pressed or pounded in. The new spacer has a beveled inside diameter to better index the right and left side spacers when they are inserted in. So a better design I am sure. So I had to fall back and order three additional spacer components in order to complete my service work. But Al located these obscure bits and they are on order. Al is a ready resource for Buellers, let me tell you. |
