So another saturday of wrenching turned up a nice surprise. I just did the rear brake pads and bleed. The previous owner gave me a bottle of brake fluid along with some other stuff. I went to use it and its DOT4. So I go buy some DOT5 and use that for the bleed and happily only 5 comes out the other end. But then I get suspicious and look in the front reservoir. I drop a little into my bleed waste and sure enough it separates. Definitely DOT3/4. So how bad is this? The front brake has good stopping power. Just keep running 3/4 in the front? Replace everything? I'm seeing that people sometimes go with DOT4 in the front. Has an SS brake line... Maybe the PO converted. (Message edited by bengny on May 04, 2013) | ||

You have an X1? That calls for DOT 3/4. 3 or 4 actually lubricates better but it's hygroscopic and will eat paint. You just change it out once a year and you'll be fine. | ||

1999 X1 models use DOT 5 | ||

Yeah X1 switched to Dot3/4 in 2000. I have a 99. | ||

Regarding the brake lines, all late model bikes, 1999-2002 ran a Goodrich braided line up front. |
