Ok, it's BEAUTIFUL DAY in Kansas City. I break out the S1W this morning, and start my preflight, all looks good. Suit up, flip on the fuel and glurb, glurb, glurb. Stuck float valve on the HSR and she peed fuel all over my shoe and driveway. Hmmm... I assess the situation for a moment and with couple light taps on the bowl she was good to go. Sweet! I think to myself, gee that was easy. Suddenly it hits me, I live in a carbureted world now, with fuel petcocks, float valves, accelerator pumps, jets and fuel line secured with hose clamps. A world wear troubleshooting does not involve a laptop. After 10 years of drag racing fuel injected sportbikes with primary/ secondary fuel management systems coupled with data loggers, boost controllers, ignition controllers, shift controllers, etc. I find its really nice to be back in a carbureted world...and I am glad to be back! Ride safe everyone, it's gonna be a great summer! |

I have two Buells: 1. 2001 S3T with fuel injection, race ECM, Race Pipe and Carbon Fiber Ham Can. Runs great. 2. 2002 M2 Low with rejetted CV40 (or the HSR 42) and a Forcewinder intake. I love both bikes but guess which one I ride most. |

Bahhhhh Humbug! Im a big fan of Flinstone simple but im a bigger fan of progress. Im honestly curious why someone would convert back to a carb. Could you guys share your reasoning. No tone or judgement here just want to understand. Thanks |

Well, try to do a roadside fix of an EFI system with a std toolkit under the seat. Plus, I LIKE to tinker, and that means with pieces/parts not keyboards and cables |

Psykick, the S1W is carbureted not a conversion... |

I have yet to have efi fail on the side of the road, bike or car. I've had carbs fail though. Can you fix a carb in an emergency? Yep. Good thing, too! Can you fix efi that way? Well...with ecmspy for android I probably could...but so far I've never had to. |

I like to start with the first press of the button. I like to idle well below 1000 rpm; closer to 800. I like to shift before I get to 4000 rpm. I like to slow down when traffic does without worrying about downshifting. I love being able to roll throttle on at 2000 rpm and feel torque with no hesitation. |

Why in the world would you want to idle 20% below spec? You are aware that you're circulating 20% less oil, right? And that there's 20% less pressure in your lifters as a result? As well as everywhere else in your engine... |

Elf, the attributes you like are mostly a function of your cam, not how your fuel is delivered. |

I find it strange that the 5or6 time AHDRA world champion in hot street bike is using a carberator. You would think he would know better. |

Stock cam. Antique SU carburetor made all my low-speed stumbling go away. Idle is really closer to 950 unless I've just gotten off the highway; oil pressure is fine. High speed performance is reduced, but only above 120 and who needs to go that fast on a public street? I get 50 mpg at 90 mph. |

I like a lower idle too. 950 is my target. At 1050 it shakes badly, like I've hit some weird harmonic with the isolators. It looks like it's going to fall apart. What a difference 100 RPM makes. |

"AVGAS" with a carb on my 2000 S3T I can now use whatever grade fuel I choose without poisoning sensors or changing anything. All my motorcycles run Avgas when I can get it. The difference in idle quality & responsiveness from the bottom end is noticeable on all of them. |

2003xb9r - what ratio of avgas to regular do you use? |

My EFI'd X1 does all of the items listed above day in day out. Except I've set my idle speed set higher to minimize the shake.I do however agree that a carbed intake makes troubleshooting for electrical problems less cumbersome. |

Engine design circa 1957, carbs seem right, EFI seems out of place. Like ABS on my '69 stang... |

Kilroy understands. 1957-style motor, 1957-style carburetor. I love the look of a 50s motor in a 90s fairing. And my neighbors love that it is quiet. Screams like a Jaguar when you wind it out, but idles and does low speed like a limousine. I can always find it right where I left it, too. I remember how she used to creep while idling. Never happens anymore. Idles smooth, like an old Harley. |

Dannybuell, I usually run 100% pure AVGAS in my 88" S1W which thrives on it. The other bikes not quite so often. As for mixing, whatever else is still in the tank when I pour it in. |

Thanks for all of your input. I'm getting all the carb tinkering out of my system right now with a CB400 (4 carbs) and i have to say i'm liking the EFI a whole bunch better. It seems to be coming down to just plane old personal preference between EFI and carbs. As long as it converts gas to fun, its all good. |

When I started this thread it was not advocate one fuel delivery system over another. I was just stating that it was nice to be old school for a change... Thanks! |

The new Triumphs have fake plastic carburator-shaped covers over the EFI throttle bodies. ! |

LOl I have A few Buells I never could afford new so I waited and waited And waited. First two were XB12S(race only pipe and ecm) & XBSCG stock low miles 2500 to be exact .. I now have Bone stock SCG (2600) still not sure what I am going to do with it. The S was sold Loved the bike at full throttle.. BUT holy crap in a towns or City the stumbling a hesitation made for some pretty hairy moments . I now have a S1 96, A project S1W (Big Bore 6 Speed) and working on two more and a parts bike ALL carbed Funny part is I am A Computer GUY (My Job) but would still run carbs |
