Unlike a recent poster with a similar issue, I am NOT an electrical engineer. I am also clueless when it comes to electrical systems in general. Yikes. This is what I DO know: 09 Uly, 55k miles. Battery tested fine, terminals were tight. Voltmeter on bike went from 2 greens, to one, to none, to engine light on in the span of a few miles. Still starts fine. Pulled the inspection cover, gave a good sniff or two, and smelled nothing unusual. Anybody have pointers? I am UNSKILLED in the use of a voltmeter... |

Step one - get the shop manual. Step two - read the stator test section. Note, they use pictures for the big words (I know this because I was just in my '06 manual for the same reason). Step three - perform the tests as described and shown in the manual. Alternate step three - if uncomfortable with the tests...find someone to help you out. |

09? Get the electrical diagnostic manual, the regular shop manual will tell you nothing. Buy a new multimeter, doesn't need to be expensive, and it will have an instruction manual on it's use. You need to be able to do three things, read AC volts, DC volts and ohms. It would be really nice to find somebody to lend some guidance just to get you started. No Badwebbers near you? Ask around, you may find someone with some hands-on experience. As you know, this topic has had a lot of coverage. Check a few of the older posts as there have been quite a few descriptions and some pictures, too. Just be sure to pay attention to the year of the bike until you can get a manual. Don't confuse your bike, which should be single phase, with the diagnostic for a three phase system. |

I have a chance to pay-it-forward a bit here...... I've got like a dozen of these Harbor Freight Volt/Ohm multi meters (new in the package) laying on a shelf in the shop....I guess I'm a hoarder. Anyway, If you don't have a volt/ohm meter, I'll donate one to the project. Shoot me an E-mail and I'll send one out ASAP N/C. Now's your chance to become an electrical expert......... Prowler- Mighty fine offer, Sir Hoarder. I appreciate it. However, I already have a multi meter from HF. Just no idea what I am doing. I am sure one of the locals has some expertise they can loan me. I DO have a lot of practice pulling the primary, so if it comes to that, the stator should be easy. |

At the risk of oversimplifying things, does over charging indicate fault with the VR, under charging an issue with the stator? |

Overcharging is likely the VR or the connectors to the VR. Under charging could be anything. |

My stator screwed my VR which blew my headlights out. I changed the VR and the stator screwed that one too, and I blew my headlights out! Fixed stator and got a new VR and all is good. So, if you have a VR failure, please do all the test in the book for your stator, 3 of them, if it fails any of the test it is toast and changing the VR will be a waste of time and money. Learn from my mistakes!! It's cheaper! |

Sounds like I might as well go ahead and replace BOTH stator and VR at the same time. The Shindengen kits seem like an upgrade, are reasonably priced, and at 54k miles, why not? I have done the xb9 gears and had several clutch issues, so getting in there is a breeze now. |

Verify that the complete set-up, stator and VR, will fit/work on the 09. All I see on roadstercycle is the three phase stator. Personally, I don't know if the physical dimensions are the same for all years so like I say, be sure the stator will fit before ordering. Then let us know how you made out |

I am your guinea pig, Griff. It will have to wait till after I get back from a Tx to Az roadtrip and find some time and money to dive into it. Good thing I have the KTM to ride! |
