I was removing a cracked header and broke a stud. Does any one have a drill guide I could buy/rent, $95 for something I'll use one time seems a bit much. Thanks Chris | ||

some dealership will rent them to you. check out your local shop thats your best bet. if not harley wants like $235.... | ||

I got the $35 (or something like that) one from ebay that is plastic with bronze inserts. Haven't tried it, but it handles well and looks to me like it would work great at least once. And probably forever if you didn't get stupid with it. Given that price, just get one new. If you don't want to keep it, sell it here to the next person that needs it. | ||

I wimped out and took it to my long time auto.mechanic. I just did'nt want to mess it up and end up having to take the head off..... Thanks for your help:Chris | ||

Wow! That plastic one is listed to fit even fit an 1125! Quite impressive. I didn't know it could be do versatile in comparison to the (inferior) metal ones. When you go to drill it out; remove the exhaust gasket from the head so the jig will seat properly. If you are careful you can reuse it but a net one is only a couple if bucks. And a left handed drill bit would be better to use. I found them for sale individually at my local northern tool https://m.northerntool.com/northerntool/product/de tail.do?itemId=333113 If you are drilling out the upper stud on the rear cylinder: you'll want a long/extended drill but so you can get away with just rotating the engine and not lifting off the frame to get clearance. I was hitting the frame with the chuck and it threw me off center of the stud | ||

Sorry to talk it up I might have had the clearance if I had a drill with a 3/8 (smaller) chuck, but my drill has a 1/2 inch chuck. Your drill might be different than mine. or you can just lift the frame. ... That's free to do And a left handed bit would let you get lucky if the stud decides to come loose. ... What do your mech allready try to do on it? I hope he didn't try an EZ out. | ||

Left handed drills are the way to go because if they do grab and you get lucky, like others have pointed out it removes the remains for you :-) | ||

if you buy the cheap easy outs or drill bits from harbor freight, you will bust them removing the stud unless your very lucky. then the real fun starts with a broken easy out in the head... you get what you pay for with tools. i had to remove the head to remove mine (twice)... good luck! |
