Had all new top end gaskets and new rings installed by a local mechanic in February. Runs great, but the push rod seals/o-rings leak badly. Took it back to him on Monday and picked it up Thursday; its worse! Based on everything I've read here, they are a royal PITA to get in right. Is there something he might be missing that I could mention to him? Read at the end of this post http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/639885.html about there being a different set of PR tubes that took up some slack, which was causing leaks. Could this be the problem and the solution or is it just poor mechanic work? I could understand it if I had done the work with such little experience, but someone who graduated from MMI and does a great deal of HD work? Are they really that difficult? Any advice would be appreciated! |

Grab the tubes and rotate them; if they turn freely the assembly was done wrong. If they have not leaked in 27000 miles the tubes are the correct part. If your base and head gaskets were upgraded to the newer ones that might be the root of your issue. Thicker o-rings are made to ensure sealing. James Gaskets makes nice ones. The rocker covers and rocker arms have to come off to install them, but not the heads. Do them one at a time, when both rocker arms are relaxed (up at the rod end) on the affected cylinder. The push rods have to come out to allow the gaskets to be changed; it's not that hard. Do you have a factory service manual? If not, get one! Consider going to XB rocker covers with PCV valves while you're in there; they will reduce the amount of oil going into your air cleaner. |
