Still trying to get the CV carb I bought to work better. It is running rich with the stock S2 exhaust. I have reset the float to spec and have the pilot screw out 2 turns. Fuel mileage is about 30MPG that is low for me. Going to look at the plugs today. It has a 45 pilot jet and a 185 main jet, will check to see where the needle is.
What is the stock setup for the original exhaust?

Thanks

You probably want a 40 or 42 slow jet...

What setting should the needle clip be at?

man...I'd have to take one of mine apart to be sure, but I want to say I run mine third slot from the top.

My bikes won't be any help though...as they're all Thunderstorm bikes. I converted my S2 years ago to T-storm heads, X1 cams, S1W race ignition, and thunderstorm pistons. I run it, with a stock muffler, at 45/190, 2.5 turns out, and it's happy but I may pull it back to a 185, it seems to load up just a *little* bit now that I have a stock muffler on it (used to run a Supertrapp).

I run the same jetting in my M2L with Buell race kit. The S1W with full race kit is happier with a 48 slow.

Thanks Rat
I also switched to the Thunderstorm heads. When I opened the carb up the clip was 3 up from the bottom. I bumped it up a slot, will see how it runs.

Not to hijack the thread, but i recently bought a S2, with thunderstorm heads, 1250 kit, Mikuni carb. It was tuned for 5500 feet elevation..im 500 feet above sea level...do you think i need to rejet? She seems to run fine, a little pinging upon load. Can it the a/v just be adjusted, or do i need to change the jets? thanks!

Try the adjustment first...do you even know what jets are in it?

5000 feet is a big change.

Triman,
Stock needle doesn't use clips....you need to see what needle you have and ,or go back to stock needle

Pulled the carb and looked at the needle. It has a non linear taper and slots with a clip. Very much not stock.

I also have the remnants of a Dynojet kit, in that kit I have my original needle and emulsion tube. The needle is a N86P
This was for a 96 Sportster 1200. Appears to be quite lean.

I am going to try using the needle in my carb and raise the clip. Any thought on using the N86P?

Do a search for "Yost Power Tube", it's a different atomizer and needle combo that turned my S3 into a new bike. Had it in for over 10 years and is still running flawless.

More research

The stock needle is a 27279-93 or N86J
No longer available from Harley

The needle I have is un numbered but might be a Dynojet needle for an S1

I am going to try it with the clip on the 3rd slot from the top.

Will call some carb suppliers tomorrow and see what needles I can get.

The needle with clips means either a Dynojet kit or a Yost Power tube. I have the latter in my Sportster. IIRC, it takes a different thread of jets than the stock tube. Also, the main jet size didn't compare straight across. As in a 180 jet in a Yost would give a different result than a 180 jet in a stock emulsifier.
Keep in mind that the stock set-up was for emissions, not run-ability, and was much too lean for good running.

Took yet another look at the main jet and found it to be a 195. I found a spare 185 and screwed that in.

Will put it back on and give it a whirl.

OK took her for a spin and its better, still feels like it might be on the rich side but better. Easier to start too.

Looks like I may have to buy the Dynojet kit for the S2
and drop the main jet to a 175

My Y2K M2 (Thunderstorm) came with the slow jet as a 42, or maybe it was a 43... I forget, but the 45 jet was definitely smoother with aftermarket intake and exhaust.

Follow Rat's suggestion and drop that one down to a lower size like the 42.

Tried to remove the slow jet and found it stuck. Am going to try adjusting the idle screw back to 1 3/4 turns and see if that helps.

Try finding a guy on ebay , Killer Carbs , not sure if he's still on there I lost the link , he's in the US , tell him what you have done to your bike and send him the old carb , he'll knock you up a super duper newie with custom cap ,replaces all the bolts with little allen bolts and dips the carbie to clean all the litte tunnels etc in there completely , the inside gets done like a port and polish heavier spring on the slide , he did one for my M2 for 165 bux for the exchange , went like a rocket and started first time every time for the 3 years I owned it , he really knows his stuff .}

Got a Mikuni and had a mechanic tune it. Bike now runs like a champ. Just got back from a 500 mile run. Absolutely flawless performance. The CV carb may be OK but the one I had was not going to work.

Nice to have my Buell back.
