I picked up a 20x38 piece of Techmat off ebay for $15 to repack my XXXXX muffler. Curious if anybody else tried this product. This size/stuff is nice for rolling the core a couple layers thick, trimming the end and slipping it back in nice and snug. Haven't run it yet so cant say how well it will last or sound. Gotta be an improvement as the stock packing was 90% gone. |

How porous is the techmat? If it's fairly solid, by wrapping the core you just turned your muffler can into a straight-through pipe because the exhaust is stuck in the core, and can't get to the canister. I've been repacking my Buell race mufflers (for my tubers) with steel wool, with good results. |

Did you mean muffler? He said "Muff Repacking"! I'm sorry.....it's early and the sun is shining! |

No disrespect to drummer their products or dyno numbers and its very possible mine was modded by a PO, but after the forward section where the interactive part was, from, 2/3's of it is nothing but an empty can.The only thing inside is a oval shaped perforated section about 1/2" smaller in diameter held in place between the forward section and the aluminum outlet piece which is where packing goes. Picture a old style turbo muffler with no guts and a 1/2 thick of silencing material glued to the inner wall, that's about what mine is. Is the Techmat porus, looks like a Hazmat oil mat pretty much. |

Looks like that's what it's actually designed for from BGF's website.
quote: Techmat has been a mainstay of the BGF product line since its inception in 1994. Techmat is a mechanically bonded (needled) mat with superior insulating properties up to 1200 degrees F. It’s 6 lb/cubic ft. density makes it the ideal thermal and sound insulator for automotive or appliances applications. Techmat has excellent vibration and corrosion resistance in heat-generating mechanical or industrial processing equipment. Applications: Appliances: hot water heaters, ovens Auto exhaust system insulation: resonators, mufflers
Sounds a bit heavy for a cubic foot of material as exhaust packing, but that's just me and I may be waaaaaay off. Yours looked like this?

It says "exhaust system INSULATION". Wrap it around the outside to keep it from radiating heat to adjacent parts (floorboards of cars, etc). And FWIW...the stock Buell muffler is pack-less. A series of perf tubes, a valve that adjusts flow path length based on computer inputs, but an otherwise baffled but hollow canister. |

I sit corrected. Hadn't thought about it as an actual heat barrier in the exhaust application. |

Yours is an identical setup to mine D adams. A essential expansion chamber with square corners. Far as the Techmat holding up, the perf holes are so small I cant imagine to short of a life span compared to the stock packing. Regardless sure sounds nice and mello now,we'll see how it holds up.
