i just got a race ecm put in.....i have hawk exhaust and k and n filter

my fan never really turned on except when i turned the bike off when it was hot..

now its still cool out 40-50 degrees and it seems the fan is always on unless i come to a stop then it turns off unless it gets hot the it turns back on.......is this normal?

usually turns off after i go slower than about 10 mph

(i wish these things had a damn temp gauge)

The EBR Race ECM uses the same fan programming that the 2010 XB models had stock, which changes the fan behavior to be less noticeable. It takes longer for it to come on, and when it does come on it is only at speed. When you come to a stop it will turn off unless it is too hot, it also is less likely to run after shutting the bike down.

The 2010 bikes fan running, with the bike moving, may seem strange but is in fact quite a clever idea for this bike.

Two reasons. One is that air cooled engines need air to cool them and this engines rear head is trapped with little air moving over it. Its why Guzzis, BMWs and the like have the heads stuck out in the wind or with Dukes an open frame. Second is the engines wide operating temp. They can take a while to heat to the right temp and a the same to go back. And, of course, that also depends on the ambient temp of the air in the first place.

So what will happen?

If you start the bike from cold and leave it on the stand the fan will come on automatic after about 2 mins. Thats normal and designed to not let the engine get past the point it will need full fan to cool it. Its called "fan duty for extended idle" I think.
With the bike moving the fan will come on at about 17mph and go off at about 13mph. It will not do this from cold but will once the engine gets to its operating temp of about 220C. If at any point the engine needs it the fan will come on at either high or low speed. So dont worry on that one.

What is happening, I think, is that the fan control is pre-empting the rise in temp of the engine. You only need to look through the large part of the ECM prog devoted to just this to see how much thought was put into it. At the end of the day you should find your bike runs cooler and better as well.

You can also change the set points of these things but I would not.
