Ok, so on the way home today, as I'm turning into my street I notice that the engine, on the bottom end, sounds like crap (what sounds like the chain slapping around in the engine case). It gets louder and faster the more I rev the motor. I'm thinking I probably should take it in since I still have a little less than a year on the extended warranty. Anybody have any idea of what it might be? P.S. The motor has always been loud, but never sounded like that. |

rotor nut?...wrong loctite use at the factory...get it to the dealer - search the forum for details |

just don't trust the dealer. I took mine in with that problem, told them I thought it was the rotor nut. They pulled the heads off and fixed something, then sure that they had fixed it they dynoed it and blew the motor. And that's how I got a new 2010 motor. |

Well, I'm not too worried about this dealer. They still have Buell in the name even though Buell's aren't being made anymore. Most other Harley dealers around here try to turn me away. One specifically won't even touch anything Buell even though I'm sure they're supposed to (wouldn't even order me a key with the key card). A Harley guy I know told me they won't even touch Harleys that are more than 10 years old, and those two reasons are why I will NEVER step foot in that specific S*** hole shop again. That's why I drive 65 min to take it to a specific shop instead of the one that's 15 min from my house. |

The CR shop is Latus-HD in Gladstone a suburb of Portland. They sell Triumphs now and still work on Buells. They are 12 miles away and have done fairly well on my CR. 1 warranty rotor at 2,000 miles and 16,000 on current rotor. My 96 S1 goes 35 miles to an independent HD shop in Sandy that has worked on it since I got it in 1997 with 7,200 miles. I now have 100,000 miles on the S1. Good workers doing good work has everything to do with longevity. |

Oh yeah, Fort Thunder Harley in Moore, OK, don't even waste your time. They only want to sell new harley's and shiny things to put on them. I personally will never give them any business not even if I want a new Harley and shiny things. |

08s and early 09s had the wrong torque and Loctite on the rotor nut. they had 250 ft-lbs and loctite green(648). Proper(mid 09+) torque is - tighten to 210 ft-lbs, back off 720 degrees(2 turns) then tighten to 300 ft-lbs. Use Red 272. Zack |

So it looks like I have excessive wear and heat on the counterbalance gears. The shop tried to accuse me of running the engine without oil. Never happened. I'm not stupid enough to do something like that. The oil was full, so I don't know what they want. Even after I told them more about my bike than they knew, they proceeded to tell me they don't have the expertise to actually work on the engine. At least they were honest about that fact. Now, does anyone know where I can get my bike worked on in OKC thats legit and the Harley will approve for the extended warranty. I already drove it to the only place I knew of. |

I posted pics of exactly the same damage. There was obviously a batch that had not been heat treated properly. Blackbear HD reported the same fault. |

I replaced the two gears. Stole them out of one of my spare motors. This happened on a 4,400 mile bike. Didn't sound too bad but I could "feel" something was wrong. As I was buying the bike cheap -insurance write off- I wasn't too worried. Once replaced and the oil changed everything was fine. |

they only looked at the ones on the stator side for mine. But the noise that I noticed was actually coming from the other (clutch) side in the crankcase. I'm assuming the other side is the same way. What do you think? |

You can always have a look,but I only found the rotor side. But it did feel like the rumble was gearbox area. Sweet as a nut once back together. And it isn't oil related,if it was the whole motor would be trashed. |

That's what I tried to tell the "mechanic" working on my bike. I told him if that i ran the engine dry, it would've spun bearings before those gears were junked up. |

I do hope the h-d folks check that your oil pressure is not low as that could cause a little less oil NOT to be where it is needed. |

Something weird goin on can't post pics??? Not an oil issue at all,the gears are just splash oiled. It was confirmed by BB HD as a manufacturing issue. There's no wear to any of the bearing surfaces, just the teeth.

So I'm getting the run around from Harley on just finding a damn tech to work on it. Harley is the worst corporation on the face of the planet. After my buell, I will never deal with them ever again. I will never even step foot into another Harley place ever. Nobody wants to touch my bike, Harley customer service won't tell me somewhere I can take it, and the warranty company says they'll open service on it if I can find a shop to work on it. What's the point of having a warranty if no one will work on the damn bike. Does anyone have any recommendations on shops around Oklahoma City or complain/legal actions I could take? I'm about fed up. |

Any dealers for the Can-Am Spyder three wheel things near you? MAYBE if the shop is slow they might work on it since they have a Rotax v-twin in the trikes. A long shot but can't hurt to ask. |
