Yea I did, impressive it ain't. Air cooled, lack of power, missing a cam, missing a few valves, not to mention it is freaking ugly. Hopefully the bike it goes into is fully faired so nobody has to see it, then they can shave 200lbs off of it by removing the chrome.

"Choice is coming to American motorcycles", yea just like the choice between cable companies....

Missing a cam? The rods are side by side on a single pin. This allows the cylinders to be offset. Since they are offset you can have one cam with two lobes driving your intakes and keep everything in alignment. That cam drives the two exhaust cams via gear drive. It's a beautiful design and you save the weight of a cam! I think the design is excellent! Taking modern design and making it look old or I should say, "Classic" is quite an achievement!

By missing a cam, they are also missing 4 more valves, reducing volumetric efficiency of the motor. While I have not seen an official weight figure for the motor, I highly doubt it will be anywhere near as light as an EBR motor, despite not having as many moving parts.

I don't know why someone would want something that looked old, but then again that seems to be the only thing Harley buyers typically care about. Oh that and converting gasoline into as much noise possible without the side effect of horsepower.

Froggy the motor wasn't designed for your age group. That is not necessarily a bad thing. It was designed for mine. I think it is a gorgeous engine with clasic styling cues, but I won't be getting one I am waiting for the bike from Mr. Buell that strikes my fancy the most.

Back to the topic of this thread: Will there be a new AX this year?

From the EBR motorcycle surveys questions, there wasn't any questions that sounded like they had any interest in making anything but superbikes.

I hope I'm wrong on this!

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I couldn't wait. As much as I loved my Uly, I got a bit tired of HDs crappy Buell parts service. I recognize they only have to support the bikes for 7 years after they pulled the plug, but they might as well have done it already to get it over with. I mean, really, seemed every time I needed something fairly simple it was a 4-6 week wait. Maybe it has gotten better over the past year, but I said enough. As much as I wanted to wait for Erik and crew to put out the AX, I couldn't.

I picked up a brand new Tiger800XC, which had a great engine, but since I also used it for the daily commute as well as my long distance touring bike that needed to be able to put two people two up on it, it wasn't the Uly replacement I was hoping it would be. So, next was a gently used 2011 GS Adventure... folks wonder why it sells? I'll tell you 400 dirty miles is why. On any given tank (8 gallons), I can milk nearly 400 miles between stops. I put knobbies on the bike and while heavy, it handles wonderfully in the dirt (it's no dirt bike that you can toss around, but despite it's size and weight, handles nearly perfectly in the dirt... don't ask me how, I just know I've done it and while no match for my Honda dirt bike, I have no issues with it in the dirt). The GSA also is a great touring bike, with one or two people.

Will I give the AX a look when it comes out? Yep, but if it can't match the GSA in many departments, it probably won't find a home in my now thinned out herd.

The way I see it, parts for the ULY are hardly a worry to bother yourself with. In today's world, you can find just about anything for anything. If 100 year old antique bikes can be restored then our bikes can be kept running. Many of the Buells were made with interchangeable parts so that certainly helps.

Then again, you could always go all "Road Warrior" and just blend a bunch of bikes together to keep just about anything on the road.

Wbrisett, I find your story about the Tiger fascinating. I test rode an 800 roadie about a year ago and was wholly unimpressed. It felt tight and light but no where near the torque of the Uly, and I was happy to get back on mine. But the GSA, wow, that's the other direction. How do you like the telelever front end, I rode my buddy's bike a few times and hated it.

I owned an RT prior to the GSA, so I understand the telelever front end and have grown to like it. It may not be for everyone, but I like it.

The triple engine on the Tiger is a great motor, it doesn't have the same torque (but then little does), but what it lacked in torque it made up in get up and go. But the suspension was really lacking for a two up bike. The Explorer wasn't out yet and maybe that's a better option. But the dealership had a fully farkled low mileage GSA they had just taken in, so I gave them my Tiger800XC, and my 1200RT and took the GSA. Of all the bikes I've owned the Uly is my favorite, but the GSA is starting to climb the ladder. The 1125CR was a GREAT bike, but I just never got enough riding time on it (seemed to spend as much time on the road as in the shop with frickin' stator issues).

(It's hard to find a 70's era japanese motorcycle part from any maker that *doesn't* fit that bike....)
