After 4 years, and 20000k miles, the battery finally died. ITs been cold, and not running as much because of all the rain. It fired right up this morning, charges to 14+ on the freeways, but it would not start back up (warm starts are hard). SO, I need a new battery. Question is, should I order a fancy schmancy one, or go with the Harley battery? |

sealed lead acid AGM (glass mat) batteries are most common, the best value. One important consideration is freshness. the disintegration of the battery begins before the battery leaves the factory. |

I bought a Scorpion replacement. It's purported to be 260CCA which is more than any other I could find. It spins it up nicely. |

Try Ballistic or Shorai lithium battery. More expensive, but much lighter. |

I went with a HD battery, simply because noone had anything else in stock, and I did not feel like waiting 3 days. That being said, 4 years is a good life |

I am happy with the 18Ah Shorais I have in both my 1125 and XB12. I don't recon you will have the issue with cold starting in CA, though I haven't really had it be an issue: I live in Maryland and have had perfect success starting both bikes that sat out all night in clear skys on 30 degree mornings, simply by turning the ignition on, brights on, and heated grips on high, which heats it internally from discharging. By the time I got the helmet on, gloves on, and all zipped up, it will crank them by the 3rd try. Anything above 40 degrees and there is no issue at all. I have had the first one in the XB for a year and my experience so far ahs been thus: I have a BMW F650GS twin, and last spring it's stator crapped out on it's Rotax motor, which they do just like the Rotax Buells and Rotax Aprilias. I rescued it by throwing the Shorai in it out of the xb12, then I commuted for 3 days with no charging system (about 75 miles in rushhour city traffic total, fans going in slow traffic) as I waited for my rewound stator to come in. I was putting it to the test because I am a torturous personality, so says my exes. I plugged in a volt meter and would watch it's volts slowly drop from 13.2 as I rode down to 12.8 by the time I got home each night. When I turned the bike off I would watch it slowly come back up to 13.3V. Each morning it was still at it's full 13.3V resting state, so I would ride it again. I only stopped because the stator came in and I fixed it and have been using the same battery all year, back in the XB, which I rode/ride daily. Because I bought two of the Shorais, I bought their charger as well, and after the "total-loss" commuting test with the BMW, before putting back in the XB, I put it on their charger and it charged to full in about 4 minutes. Needless to say, I am impressed. I am thinking of buying the tiny 12Ah Shorai to keep with me on long trips in the desert, on the Rotax bikes especially, because it is so small. ~ Bernie |
