BEST LAP TIMES - SUPERBIKE PRACTICE 1 1 Josh Hayes Yamaha 1:38.957 23 Danny Eslick Suzuki 1:40.746 36 Martin Cardenas Suzuki 1:40.757 54 Roger Hayden Suzuki 1:41.189 72 Larry Pegram Yamaha 1:41.424 2 Josh Herrin Yamaha 1:41.470 6 Chris Clark Suzuki 1:42.098 99 Geoff May EBR 1190RS 1:42.242 25 David Anthony Suzuki 1:42.993 18 Chris Ulrich Honda 1:43.366 13 Cory West EBR 1190RS 1:43.438 20 Aaron Yates EBR 1190RS 1:43.612 11 Chris Fillmore KTM 1:43.863 88 Robertino Pietri Kawasaki 1:44.208 68 Dustin Dominguez EBR 1190RS 1:44.537 44 Taylor Knapp KTM 1:45.941 I'd say that, at Daytona,it's more about the 4 Buells & the 2 KTMs next up - Pegram, Roger & Danny - that's what 2013 will be for EBR [until something BIG happens.....] zero times for Pat Mooney & 1125R in DSB...... Superbike qualifying session over. Looks like fastest EBR is Geoff in 8th. Hayes is still ~2 seconds faster than anybody else and was turning pretty regular 200 MPH trap speeds, ~10 MPH faster than the EBRs. On the bright side, it looks like the EBRs are still consistently quicker than the KTMs, the only other V-twins running. (Message edited by Hughlysses on March 14, 2013) |

With that long, high speed stretch at Daytona it is a forgone conclusion that the winner will be either a Suzuki or Yamaha. I don't like seeing there be no other contenders but I guess that's racing. The clear 10 to 15 mph difference will be impossible to overcome for the other bikes, no matter how well they handle or how good the rider is. Unless someone pulls a Tonya Harding! Wouldn't it be appropriate for AMA to level the playing field for this race with mandatory weight additions to those bikes which are pumping out such enormous horsepower to have that kind of speed advantage? I realize at most of the other tracks that advantage isn't as easily exploited and it probably isn't needed. Of course, I'm not sure how much weight would be needed to slow them down, geesh. If I was a rabid Yamaha fanboy I'm sure I would be all giddy about it and not feeling sour grapes at all. But I'm not. I do remember hearing other manufacturers complaining about a displacement advantage even though there was no trap speed that would prove such an advantage existed. I'm not sure how much I want to watch the race after seeing the practice times today. ps: Josh Herrin on lap 12 pulled 206.091mph trap speed. Is his ass really that skinny? Josh Herrin is a very little guy. The inlines have RPM going for them. The twins don't. |

"The inlines have RPM going for them. The twins don't." We've known that for generations, but it doesn't seem to be helping Kawasaki or BMW out much right now. |

And this is Honda's first year back in, right? I get the development time, but ridiculous is ridiculous. I'm going to tune in to the live timing and see what changes. |
