So I've recently gotten my 2000 X1 back together from winter maintenance and am experiencing some response issues - when cold starting I'll get a really loud pop when it turns over and it won't want to idle without some throttle input. Then when riding from cold I'll get the annoying and familiar 3k pop and bog. But even when the bike is warmed up, if it's idling and I give the throttle a quick jerk open and shut it'll hesitate then get poppy. What I did over the winter was replace all of the intake seals and traded Uden for a different pair of injectors. I can only wonder if one of these things I did do/incorrectly did is the actual cause of this, or if it's something else entirely. Do these symptoms sound conclusive to anything?

Any thoughts or tips would be awesome.

Back in the '60's, when mc owners manuals actually had specs on valve clearance, setting points and timing, they included tuning tips.

From what I remember from my 650 BSA owners manual, 'banging in the exhaust' meant a rich mixture. 'Banging in the intake', or a soft throttle (bogging at throttle opening) indicated a lean mixture.

I'm going to say you have a lean situation. Absent an AFV value from ECMSpy, try riding 20-30mins at a constant throttle setting. Cruise to a nearby town and back on the interstate, for example, to let the ECM 'learn' the new intake seals and injectors. May solve your issues.

Either one of the repairs you made could cause this. If your intake is leaking its possible once it warms up the seals will expand enough to stop leaking. You could try spraying brake clean/ carb clean around the seals when its cold and see if the engine rpms change. I would start with that, if your rpms stay consistent it's possible you swapped in a bad injector, but usually injectors are the opposite and act up after they are warm...

yeah I'll agree it's more than likely a lean situation. Before this winter I had a problem with the AFV falling to around 80, which I thought could've been from leaky injectors and was what made me decide to replace the seals and swap injectors. I did try to look in the manifold a little while ago and didn't see any actual "drool" in there but I'll look again tomorrow when there's better light and check all of the intake seals. I'm also keeping an eye on the other "x1 dying under load" thread going on to see if anything useful pops up there too

So today I did get a chance to do a little more poking around - interestingly I found that I was seeping in some air through that little smog nipple under the throttle body, and somewhere around the front intake seal there does seem to be a leak. So. If I was unsuccessful in seating the intake seal, is it possible to remove the flange, re-arrange it and get it to re-seat? Or are intake seals a one-time use only kind of thing and need to be chucked once they've been compressed?

No sense in messing around. You've already been in there once.

Buy new and redo. Should be able to pick up that nipple plug at the HD dealer.

Change the intake seals again, use blue silicone ones, and be careful to torque the bolts evenly. +1 on twoseasons advice re nipple replacement.
