Hey everyone,

I have been a Bueller for 12 years, give or take. Bought a new M2 in 2001, worked on it constantly, then bought an 1125r in 08. I have always been obsessed with Ulys, and finally got one.

I found an orange 2006 for 2500 bucks. It is all stock, and has had a mild tipover. One of the bags is roughed up, and one of the tank protectors as well.

How tough are these tank protectors to remove? Anyone have any tips as to how? I did a quick search, but found nothing conclusive.

The previous owner said the bike "pinged" when hot, does the Race ECM fix that?

Thanks,

Happy Buelling!

Dunno about the pinging. (Which grade of fuel was the PO using?) but you can remove the puck (If you are referring to the frame puck) by "sawing" away between it and the frame with fishing line.
They are glued on tight! : )
Once you have it separated from the frame make sure you remove all excess traces of glue before you install the replacement.
NOTE: Mark the position of the original puck before you remove it 'cause once the new one is applied it is very difficult to reposition it! (DAMHIK)
Welcome to the wonderful world of ULY ownership.

Congrats on a smoking good deal for a Uly.

Check the rear motor mount where it bolts the rear head to the frame. Check all the motor mounts for that matter. They can break if you endo into the side of a corolla (DAMHIK).

For pinging, I'd first make sure the static timing is correct, the process is in the service manual. Instead of magic harley rivits to put the cover back on, you can use screws, or normal pop rivits with RTV on the back... you just want to make sure the pin heads don't end up in that timing chamber.

I don't know if the normal 06 ECM mapping pings. My 07 doesn't ping, but I bought it used. The paperwork showed the previous owner did the comfort kit which I think had a reflash, and who knows if he did any other reflashing to it.

You do need to feed it high octane gas though, or it will ping like crazy. Its a very high compression air cooled motor.

We had quite a few guys here when the 2006's came out complaining of pinging issues. Like Reepi says, make sure you're using premium fuel; if it still pings unacceptably, check the static timing. If that's right, I'd make sure the correct heat range spark plugs are installed. If THOSE are right, try retarding the timing slightly; repeat until the pinging goes away.

They peel off, just pull on them starting at the bottom, some fishing line can help if it being stubborn. Before you peel it off, use a pencil to trace around the puck to make positioning the new one easier.

$2500 a steal.

On 06/07 there isn't any reflash with the comfort kit. Mine pings too when it's hot. When I run real gasoline it doesn't ping but as soon as it gets ethenol it pings like crazy. Since I live in the corn belt all our fuels contain ethenol so I had to back off on my timing. As mentioned, once you drill out the rivets you can just run a 10-32 tap in the rivet holes and use a little button head or allen cap screw. Enjoy your new toy!

My 06 used to ping. I pulled the timing cover and retarded the timing by a couple degrees. Still runs great, no ping, happy-happy.

I do have the comfort kit hardware installed (as Tootal noted, there is no reflash for a DDFI-II bike).

Thanks for all the responses!

I too, live in the corn belt, so real gas is tough to find. Ill have to back the timing off a bit if more fuel from a performance ecm doesnt do the trick. I just dont want to lose too much power.

It was a smoking deal, but its only half legit. I knew the PO since the bike was new, and I am buying it from him at that price to help out with some finances. Dont worry, Uly values arent that far down!

Decorah, IA? Yes, you are right about in the middle of the corn belt! I get down that way once in a while. I made the deal on my bike at LaCrosse H-D/Buell but the bike was actually delivered from Waukon H-D/Buell, which is owned by the same people.

Well I just met the boys from Toppling Goliath Brewery in Decorah. They were in St. Louis last Saturday for the Lupulin Carnival. Had some fine hoppy beer with them too. Hoping to ride up there once the weather gets better!
