Hi Guys. I'm attempting a carb conversion on my 1999 X1. I've installed a crane Hi-4 Dual Fire Ignition #8-1100 and the compatible rotor 32402-83. Problem is- when timing the bike there is no way i can adjust the ignition far enough to set the timing correctly- it's way out. I'm worried that i've bought the wrong ignition module. I notice in the fine print-"fits 1971 and up Sportster® (except XL 1200S)". Second issue: I only went for dual fire 'cos i had just bought a new coil but now i see that Crane recommends I buy one of their coils for the correct resistance. Will it run or do any harm to run with the OEM coil from FE bike? Thanks. |

Use the timing mark on the crankshaft as visible through the inspection plug between the cylinders. Set the timing to the correct position and drill a new set of holes in the mounting plate. I use a single fire Drag Specialties cam position sensor and a M2 coil, tachometer, and module. Measure the resistance of your existing coil and compare it with what Crane wants. It should run fine. Your module is for a dual fire set-up. (Message edited by harleyelf on February 25, 2013) |

Yup. i considered that. I think a better option might be to rotate the timing rotor instead though. that way i'll still have the adjustment that the slotted holes in the Hi-4 allows. The manual gives the OEM coil as having primary resistance of 0.5- 0.7 Ohms. Crane manual says- "Coils used with the HI-4 must have at least 2 ohms primary resistance." Crane also recommends spiral core wires and i'm not sure what kind the stock ones are. |

Yup. i considered that. I think a better option might be to rotate the timing rotor The shaft mount point is keyed to accept a tang on the cup, ( unless yours is different ) so you are going to make a new tang on the timing cup ? I would alter the plate mounting I think .. unless that means hacking the ign module. } |

Problem solved. I didn't realise there is more than one TDC mark on the flywheel. Works now. |
