Checked it again with the bike running. Second X from the bottom. Shut off bike let it sit for three minutes and first bottom X. Took off primary inspection cover, checked inside with flashlight. Oil was clean and just appeared under the chain. I had just changed the primary oil two weekends ago so I don't think oil is going into the primary. There is a little over 100 miles since the refill at Long Branch NJ Harley Davidson. The mystery continues..... |

I have checked the oil both ways throughout ownership. As per the owners manual and while running. (Message edited by tankhead on January 30, 2013) |

I have an 09 and the only reliable method I've found for checking the oil level is while the bike is warm and running. Mine has leaked in the past when I was running mobil 1 syn in it. I have since changed to a motorcycle specific dino oil and haven't noticed any seepage. I also had an issue with the primary seeping around where the clutch cable enters it. Removing the cable and using a dab of rtv sealant on the o ring sealed that up. |

Tankhead, are your referring to the small cover where you check primary chain tension? If the oil is up anywhere near the top run of chain, it is way too full. Please forgive me if I am not understanding where you checked the primary oil level. If you were checking in the clutch inspection cover, that would be about right. Thanks! |

If you were checking in the clutch inspection cover, that would be about right. That is what I meant. The bottom rung of the chain not the top rung. |

Okay thanks. Wow, this is really weird. I have to admit that the oil level on my 08 XT seems to vary a lot after checking it when hot and engine switched off. It does however, read consistently if checked hot with the engine idling. Does not use any oil, that I've noticed anyway. If I shut it off and check it, it might be at 2nd X from top. If I restart, let run for 15 seconds and shut off again, it might be at the bottom X. I don't get that at all. Just check it hot and idling if you want an accurate reading. |

I am doing a rocker box breather reroute, and this has got me thinking. By routing 2 3/8 vent tubes into 1 3/8 vent tube, I might restrict venting. This would be further restricted with a filter or catch can at the end. Could this be causing excessive oil consumption? I think mine will be open ended, but still will be more restrictive than stock. |

Tankhead, Just a theory, but maybe I wasn't clear. I know a lot of people have done breather reroutes. It looks to me like this could restrict crankcase venting. Could this cause an increase in oil consumption/or leaking? |

I don't know. Are you asking if I SHOULD or if I HAVE? I have not done a re-route. I can not answer either way. You said: Could this cause an increase in oil consumption/or leaking? NOT doing the breather re-reoute or DOING the re-reoute? Are you thinking the the re-route is a possible solution for me? |

I was wondering if you HAD done a reroute, and if this (DOING the reroute) was causing your problem. I should have asked if this had been done to your bike. |

No Prob. Arry. I wished it was. The motor is clean now so I will just keep an eye on it every time I ride. Pre-ride check, post ride check. Thanks for your time. |

My 12X has been weeping in this area for quite some time too. The trans vent line is loose (can move it with a pair of double x needle nose pliers). Looks like a total pain to get a new clamp in there. Supposed I'll check out the front pulley and starter while I'm in there too. Suppose the engine needs to be rotated for this. Bummer. |
