Does anyone know what yr. they started fitting on a new/different cam where the throttle cables hook up to on our Uly's throttle body? This cam was to help low speed throttle control, not as abrupt.
Then the next question(you knew it was coming), will these new cams fit on an 06 Uly? Or any other yr for that matter. Thanks

I think it might have been changed in 2008 to go with the new fuel injection system #3.

I just had to buy new cables and the part numbers I believe were for 08 and up. This would seem to indicate that the change was made then. Of course this would also seem to indicate that everything would have to be replaced. Not sure how you could tell other than to compare part numbers?

Yep, 08 made the change to the eliptical cam.

Greg- You may have to do quite a bit of fiddling to make the newer cam work, if it will fit the throttle shaft. The 08-up cables have built-in 90 degree bends at the throttle body end made of tubing. The earlier cables are straight at that end. If you could find photos of an 08-up throttle body on the bike, it'd give you a much better idea if you have to use the 08-up cables AND fabricate different attachment points for them to go with the 08-up cam.

When the 08' model came out I was at Sturgis and demo'd it and that throttle cam ruined the ULY's off-idle character. It made the bike feel anemic as you pull away from a dead stop. Why they messed with this I can't imagine. My 06' has never had a problem with off-idle throttle abruptness. My wife's 07" Sportster off-idle abruptness is another matter altogether so I know the difference. That anemic throttle cam for the 08' was an unnecessary down grade in my un-asked for opinion.

The 06/07 fuel injection was pretty lean from the factory and at least my bike was really jerky at low speeds, like putting through the neighborhood. Every little bump in the road would cause the throttle to move a hair and the bike would jerk. I believe they were trying to fix that but the 08 fuel injection was smoother and probably didn't need the new cam. Now that I've played with ecmspy my fuel is not as lean and it's a lot easier to ride slow.

Here's everything related to the Induction Module for the '08's from the technical pdf:

2008 throttle cam

2008 throttle cam 2

When the 08' model came out I was at Sturgis and demo'd it and that throttle cam ruined the ULY's off-idle character.
Unfortunately that confirms my suspicions...

I'd like some off-idle character on my '08...

So, all 08 bikes came with a revised throttle cam? The 08 Ulys came with heated grips. Are these the same heated grips which were sold as P&A?

Whoops, was going down the wrong route, the cam is on the throttle body not throttle tube...

It depends on what you want from the bike? My 06 bike would "leap up" even into third gear with no problem. Thats fine for "stunt" work but not so good for road work and on the 06 bike I would be "feathering" the clutch on a very hard pull to control the power. I found the key to this control, on the 06 bike, to be good "pickup" off idle via good setup of "idle" and throttle control cables.

The 10 bike runs near perfect but the "off idle" lacks the hard edge of the 06 bike. If it was me I would change the cam ratio of the valve a little.

I remember when taking off from a stop sign on that 08' ULY demo ride, that it felt like it had no torque at all and I thought there was something wrong with it. It certainly made me not lust for an upgrade to an 08' model in the least. I really wanted to like that "new and improved" ULY but was very disappointed and reported to this forum about it after getting back from Sturgis that year. My wife's 07' Sportster came with the jumpiest off-idle fuel injection I had ever experienced. It was dangerous in stop and go traffic. They reflashed it for free to the latest programming available after I bitched about how ridiculous it was to ride and that really helped, not perfect but way, way better. To be fair to Harley, it was the Sportsters first year with fuel injection. My 06' ULY is still better and no problem at all for me. I agree that it is jumpy at under 20 mph in 1st gear and that is why folks her go to the XB9 primary change.
I demo'd the first year XR1200 and found it's off-idle manners just fine by me and hopefully all Sportsters exhibit as good of fuel injection these days. The XR Harley was way better in low speed smoothness than our ULYs. Different gearing. My ULY felt much faster though.

This mod makes for an awesome throttle response.

Thanks for all the responses. It's good to hear everyone's opinion on the subject to. But if Hugh(lysses) is right about needing to fabricate parts, then it's not worth it to me. I was thinking it might just be a bolt on part, try it and see if I like it better, not alot of time/money wasted. I'm on the fence myself. I'm a big fan of the low speed take off factor of my 06, except when putzin up the alley or on technical trails, it can be a pain in the ars.
