I have this kit that came from one of my Buell bike purchases. Are the orange gaskets the ones I need to do the XB rocker cover conversion? Any other gaskets needed. If so I only need the covers with the valves?

No not the orange one's the black one's with the least amount of webbing?? And the thin metal\rubbery black ones are rocker box gaskets(save those in case you have the rocker boxes off the heads) The covers, a T hose connector and some hose length. I see you have a oil pump gasket also (the round black one on right). Save that. The papery washers in the bag go on the rocker box covers just before you bolt em down. I did mine for $117. I got all the part numbers for each part and bought them. But Al at American Sport Bike has the nice polished ones for a good deal!! http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A20000.html |

I would give you my parts list but it is unfortunately in my shop manual and that's in the race trailer for the winter. I tried to go get into it and there is to much snow blocking it to get inside sorry. |

Thanks, Prey. So if the previous kit owner redid his gaskets and did not use XB covers, but used the stock S3T covers, does this mean I should have unused XB gaskets in the kit? I would love to save money & use what I was given. |

So if I have the covers and pcv valves I can check them off the below list. I dug this up from 2009 when you were asking questions Prey. Brinnutz had helped with the list. What is the grommet and where does it go and what is the hex socket button head for (is it the replacement for the breather bolt)? Qty 1 17605-00YB COVER, TOP, FRONT, MACHINED Qty 1 17642-02A COVER, TOP, REAR, MACHINED Qty 2 17606-00YA GROMMET, VITON, BLACK Qty 2 17607-00Y PCV TURRET VALVE Qty 2 868A SCREW, HEX SOCKET BUTTON HEAD Qty 2 17353-89C GASKET, ROCKER COVER Qty 2 63858-49 GASKET, ROCKER BOX (Message edited by bsanorton on January 06, 2013) |

The grommet goes in the top cover, it seals the pcv valve to the cover. Also the 2 button heads replace the breather bolts, they are 1/2-13 thread so you can use any bolt type you want. I put stainless button heads on my bikes last year, before that I used short 1/2" bolts. Mike |

Oh and don't forget you may have to clearance the front cover a tiny bit. The xb covers are a pinch bigger in that spot. Here is the only picture i could find.

+1 re what Preybird said. When I did mine, the XB cover Just Slightly interfered with the front motor mount. Possibly 1/8in or less. A few strokes with a round file solved the issue. |

If your putting them on the M2, you will have to file down the front left corner.. just a bit to let it slide over the Allen bolt. |

Got all the parts needed in today. The rocker cover gaskets are brown, The small square gaskets are like clear. Do you guys use anything on them like permatex or grease to hold them in place while assembling them? |

Now that I've most of my time grinding an allen tool to fit the rear rocker cover and all the bolts are out. Do I need to split the old style cover to get it off? I'm having difficulty getting it above and away from the rocker box. Also see my question above in last post. I now know why i love both Nortons and Buells. The Norton also needs a grinded down allen key to mount the intake bolts to the head. Wish they were the same size, lol! |

It seems I have to file down the rear cylinder cover by the exhaust pushrod area or am I not working it in properly? |

Sounds like you have it in backwards. I did not have to file the rear at all. But you never know with HD quality check BS. I have seen some of the worst parts made by them! If i can i buy no HD parts and spend the extra on good aftermarket parts. I try my best not to support those fools. Do you have the gas tank off when you are trying to do the rocker box mods?? it easier than trying to squeeze in there. |

Yup, everything is off for easy access. The pcv valve should be on the left & high point on the rear cylinder correct? See picture. (Message edited by bsanorton on January 18, 2013) |

I have a 96s1 that got XB rockers many years ago. the only thing I had to do was find my cut down allen for that corner. The problem you have makes me think you might have a torn front isolator and the frame is sagging a bit. The engine rocks in the frame, the front isolator is the weakest link and takes all of the stress. Upgrade path? Take a look at the classified for sale section here. There is someone making a 'Stenzel bar' that helps with this weakness the tube frame models share. |

Got them on. Not sure what happened to my last post, but after trying again after another cup of coffee and not looking forward to another project, the rear went on without filing down. The front went on with no grinding also. Time to clean up the areas & reassemble.

& don't ya just know. After cleaning everything up and reassembly, no leaks from the new covers, I can now clearly see the leak from the rocker box!!!! AAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH! Oh well At least I'm familiar with the procedure! |

Just to help tie up loose ends, those orange gaskets in your first photo are for the 07/08/09/10 rocker box/rockerbox cover joint. |

Thanks Dynosaur. If anyone would like them, just ask. Also for the rocker box gaskets I will need 16800-84A. correct? Do I need upper pushrod seals or will I not be touching the tubes? |

You wont be touching the tubes unless the heads are coming off. |

Thanks Prey, I thought so. Is that the correct number for the new and improved rocker box gasket? Do i use anything like permatex copper on them or grease? |

Yep 16800-84A for rocker box / cylinder head interface. Make sure you follow the instructions in the manual and turn the engine to unload the cams (you know this already) and when you put it back together pull the rocker box down little by little and let the tappets bleed fully before turning the engine. |
