I have noticed oil pooling up in the housing where my air cleaner is. Not a lot but enough to make me wonder. Is it normal to find a little in there? Is it damaging my air cleaner or it's job? What is causing it? I found I have a stock air cleaner while doing some winter work on it & want to buy a K&N but not if this is a problem I need to fix. Thank you in advance for helping! | ||

That's most likely oil from your crank case breathers, which are the two tubes that connect into the bottom of your airbox at the rear towards the seat. Many people re-route those houses and install a catch can and breather filter to keep from "oiling" the filter. | ||

Get with Al at American Sport Bike in the sponsor section. That's where I got my catch can. The one he stocks for XB's looks like it came from the factory. Bolt it on, run the breather lines to the catch can, and plug the holes in the bottom 'tray' of the airbox assy. Done. Hope this helps, Dave | ||

It is perfectly normal for your breathers to leave a little oil in the airbox. As others have said, you can fit a catch can or just re-route your breathers to fresh air somewhere else. Contrary to the old wifes tale, there is absolutely no power benefit in re-routing the breathers on the XB models (I've done back to back dyno runs and there is no measurable difference), but it does keep your airbox cleaner. If you use a catch can you will have to empty it regularly, and it will seem to catch a lot more than is now being deposited in your airbox, as it collects condensed water vapour/emulsified oil that would normally evaporate in your airbox. | ||

What Trojan says... Additionally rerouting the breather also keeps the throttle body & butterfly valve cleaner, too. |
