So I got a 2000 X1 with 12xxx miles clutch was workig great then the other day I layed it down on my way to work. The only damage was to the enormous left side stock plastic I have know Idea why I still have em anyways the shifter was destroyed too. The clutch lever has minor scratches but when I picked the bike up the clucth lever was pulled in slightly up and past the handle bar. well now the clutch doesnt work at all i pull the lever in and nothing. I did a standard clutch adjustment hoping that would fix it but did nothing at all. I followed the manual to the t. Does anyone have any idea what it might be Im thing maybe my clutch plates got warped but im not sure just wanted to seek some advice if anyone has any ideas. |

Did you pull the clutch cover off? If so how does it move? |

I pulled the clutch cover when I did a adjustment. It looked and moved normal. Im going to pull the whole clutch out tommorow, the problem is I wont be able to tell what the problem is unless it is completly obvious. I have done clutch adjustments but never replaced plates or anything like that. Any help is appreciated. |

Disassemble the ball-and-hook assembly. Perhaps one of your three balls has jumped out of its track. Did the lever have resistance when you pulled it in during the adjustment? Did the hook move smoothly? Was there any depth motion to the plates? Your retaining circlip may have popped out of its groove. When you take the hook-and-ball assembly off as part of removing the clutch it will be obvious if that is the issue. That would make the whole basket move instead of just the plates, causing the clutch not to release. |

When I did the adjsutment the hook was moving smothly there was motion when I pulled the lever it would compress and release when I let the lever out. Or vis versa. During the adjsutment everything seemed normal. The lever had no resistence when I made the adjsutment. Havnet had time this weekend but hopefully during the week I will dissasemble the ball and hook and check the circlip. Thanks for the help so far. |

Samething happened to me when i layed my bike down. But the only difference was I had got the top-end rebuilt after my mishap. I would check the balls just incase one cracked, and if they are fine I would let the bike idle until it has reached max operating temp. Then what I did was engage and disengage the clutch continuously for a few minutes and then check to see if it disengages. Mine did? A guy suggested that sludge build up between the places would essentially need to be burned off and the opening and closing of the clutch would allow the sludge to be removed. It sounds crazy but it actually worked for me. LASTLY. Check your main drive cover and ensure NO cracks are on the cover, this would also prevent it from disengaging. Best of luck keep us updated. |

I got to working on it today. I checked the ball and hook assembly and it looked fine all the circlips were good also. I changed the fluid and adjusted the clutch again put it in 1st (engine off) pulled the clutch in and did not roll. Fired it up and let it sit for about 20 mins turned the bike off put it in first pulled the clutch in didnt roll. Finally I put it in 1st pulled the clutch in and fired it up didnt jump or anything, so I took it down the road and it was working great. The clutch is back doing what it should now. Thanks for all help. |
