Hey, Bart,
Got in touch with Andre. Going to get together this week.

I'd like to make springfast this year but will have to play it by ear. I do most of my work between February and June so who knows what will happen.

Safe travels,
Larry

Thanks for the name calling, I guess that means you are losing an argument?
I don't mind. If it makes you feel like a "man" go ahead and throw out some more.

Larry,
Glad to hear you got ahold of him. Enjoy the warm weather, hopefully the planets will align and we can get together later in the spring.

Well, I'm not sure if we were arguing. I simply stated that if Adam would like to try my Uly out in his endevoure to find another bike, he may. Then you commented with some sub sophomoric interjection that would lead one to believe that in no way a Uly could be considered a dual sport. Being that I read some of the Big, Bad, and Dirty post; I see some of the Uly owners with some aggressive off road tires traversing creeks, mud, dirt, and hills. I stated that in my rebuttle, instead of presenting any further evidence to back your claim, you began name calling. So Bart, how is a Uly not capable of being considered a dual sport? I personally have no intention of taking mine off the beaten path, I do not prefer that type of riding. I have seen much evidence that a Uly, especially the taller XB12X, as being capable of traversing some dirt trails one might encounter. Like I said, I don't to that type of riding, so I cannot give first hand knowledge.

Josh,
I did not begin name calling, I merely stated that I have a low tolerance for idiots and morons. I did not mean to insinuate that YOU are a moron or idiot; you can prove that out for yourself.
I was merely trying to explain why I am an azzhole, among many other reasons..
You stated, “I can't help but notice that whenever someone is losing an argument they revert to name calling.” So when you started calling me names, I assumed there was an argument going on somewhere…
I owned a ULY, and "I" found it to not only be a piss poor sport touring bike, I also would never have attempted to take it anywhere near where I take my DRZ, which IS an "enduro", or my XTZ., which is considered an adventure bike.
That being said, the ULY can be considered an "adventure" bike simply because riding one is, in itself, an adventure.
As evidenced by many of the members on the ADVrider forum, ANY bike can be an adventure bike. I think this is the market that Erik was intending the ULY to compete in. Not the Enduro market. The Enduro market IMO is marketed more towards the off-road segment.
Granted, as you stated, many owners have put off road tires on their ULY's, and taken them off-road. I think on ADV I have seen a few pics of them on some of the Colorado passes.
"I" would never have attempted it, even with knobbys on "my" ULY. I knew the bike would be a handful off-road from the minor excursions I had attempted. As such, I would not call it an Enduro, and was simply trying to state that.
The ULY never lived up to my expectations, IMO it was just a taller XB12 sport bike.
So, yes, the XB12X is capable of traversing many dirt trails, I still would not consider it an "Enduro". Adventure bike? Yes...

Still on the topic of "adventure" bikes, on the ADV board, there is an individual across the pond, that has a GSXR1000 set up with knobbys. He has posted a couple of videos of his excursions. While I have found the videos entertaining, I cringe every time he drops the bike. And yes, IMO the guy is an idiot. But hey, I guess we can consider his bike an adventure bike, eh?

That is a fair assessment based off of your experience with the Uly. However, someone would be less inclined to presume your insults are directed at them when you post emoticons and abbreviations interjecting a separate conversation. Yes I took it as a direct jab at myself because you made it clear that your "opinion" of the Uly was very low. I don't see what the problem would be if someone test rode one to see if they might like it, or use it as more variety so that it will land them with the bike they want. Maybe as a base on what to look for and what they wouldn't like in a bike. You seemed to think that was a horrible thing for me to do thus igniting yet another exchange, If I wanted your opinion, believe me, I would ask for it. Not everyone likes the same things and there is no "perfect" bike. Everyone has an opinion on what they like and they're all different. You and I seemed to have contrasting opinions on many things, I will gladly change my views on things if sufficient enough of evidence is presented. Do I think a Uly is a dual sport? Well I certainly think it looks like one? Do I care? Not really, since dirt riding isn't really my thing. Are there better bikes out there than what I have? Well sure there are, but I think Buells have character and a uniqueness that I have yet to find in another bike. So if I disagree with you in the future, and I promise you I will, ambiguous name calling and insinuations aren't going to change my mind.

I don’t see the problem with someone test riding a ULY either.
Since CJ had started the discussion about enduros, I thought you were offering him the test ride. I assumed that you monitored the board, and knew that he had a ULY. When Adam mentioned an enduro, I knew he was thinking of a real Enduro, not an adventure bike like CJ is kind of leaning towards. I didn’t think test riding a ULY was a horrible thing, I just thought it was dumb to offer a ULY owner, (CJ) a test ride on your ULY. Not realizing that you were speaking to Adam.
Opinions can be derived from experience, as you pointed out so well in our previous discussion about American made versus Japanese vehicles. You had such a bad time with your Honda, I believe? Yes you got very animated in that discussion to the point of wanting to kick my azz. You swore ALL Jap vehicles were inferior due to that one bike.
In the same manner, I’ve described my personal experience with the ULY. But I didn’t develop a hatred for them. Nor do I claim ALL American vehicles are crap. I still have two Buells in my garage for the time being.
As for agreeing, or disagreeing? I could care less. And promising to do so, just gives me a chuckle. I am old, and set in my ways and really don’t care. You can call me all the names you want, it doesn’t matter, and I’ve been through worse, trust me. You can threaten to kick my azz all you want; you’re just showing what kind of person you are to all the fellow board members out there.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a nice day. You should hop on that ULY and go for a ride.

I wish I could, I have a 1 year old that is sick, a wife that works weekends, and a honey do list from hell. It wasn't just my Honda that gave me problems, I have a friend with a Suzuki that is always bring it over for me to check out, my father has an 07 Vulcan 2000 that is having problem after problem, most of which I have helped him fix. I don't mind working on either Jap, American, Korean, whatever. They all have their problems. When people tell me Hondas are bulletproof, it gives me a laugh. Riding isn't my only passion. I am currently restoring an AMC Marlin. Another one of those things that I believe Americans did right. For a 47 year old car, it hums like newer V8. And once again, when people like you say negative things about American made cars, I laugh, not because I think anyone is retarded, but because I know first hand that my 47 year old American V8 runs a hell of a lot better than most 20 year old Japanese cars. But then again, it took time, effort, and patience to get it running like it is. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. So when Buell came along and had this 50's style motor in a modern looking frame (tuber, not XB) I couldn't tell you why, but I just liked it.

Wow, I missed a lot... havent checked this since last week. So First of all, I did see your post about offering your uly up for a test ride, but since you specified CJ, I payed no mind to it. I also figured he would pipe up about already owning one, but I see that Bart has done that for him. I have thought about a Uly in the past, but more for longer distance rides, not necessarily for off-road purposes as I have heard from many that they are not the best equipped for that.

My 1125 isnt all that great for long distance rides with a passenger as my wife and I learned up in Durango at the Buell Rally held there in 2011. After that, My wife expressed an interest in learning to ride, so I sent her off to the MSF course, and had converted my track bike (CBR600RR) into a street bike for her to ride. It turns out that sportbikes just arent that comfy for longer distances regardless of the amount of passengers on them, which sparked my interest (then) into the Uly... but now my tastes have changed a bit, and There are many other bikes out there that will work for what I want AND give me the option of a little better handling in the dirt should I choose to travel that route.

I'm not big into riding dirt, mainly because I havent ever... but I'm open to giving it a shot. I think before I do I will get a dirt bike (strictly dirt) to have fun with, but any bike purchase for me is not in sight in the immediate future as I have a few other priorities...just like many other people here. I think we'd all have a garage full of bikes (and other various toys) if we could, but we all have priorities and money constraints.

Anyway, thanks again for the offer, but I have ridden a Uly before, and have decided that it isnt the ride for me...at least not at this juncture.

The job itself is a temp job. I am going to talk to them about day shift.

I could be up for a ride Sunday. I'm working overnight on Saturday night. So, I might be a bit tired. Let me see what happens Saturday. If I get some good sleep, it'll be much more likely.

YES! Tis a boy! we found out yesterday ... I'll have to start buying little dirt bikes before long! is 18 months too early?? : )

CJ, Nights do suck, but there are some advantages...You can do shopping when everyone else is at work or asleep... you dont have to deal with rush-hour traffic... usually you dont have to deal with as much BS as the day shift people, etc.

Yeah... it was 5F today when I got out of work. It's supposed to be the same tomorrow. I'm not prepared for that temp plus wind chill. I have heated grips, but that's about it. Even in layers, it's a bad idea to make yourself that cold. And I'll be tired on top of that.

Next time. When it's warmer.

anyone ride this weekend? I went out a little yesterday just to go to Moto Authority's 4 year anniversary, but the weather was great! Would have ridden longer, but I started a tiling project at home and needed to get back to it. We are planning on putting our house up on the market soon here... so I have to get a lot of crap done before we do that. I kinda just want to ride though!

I know Bart went out on Saturday. I didn't get out. I am moving to day shift starting this week, so it should be a bit easier. With the temps getting slightly higher this week, I may ride to work. We'll see.

Adam,
Not really chilly. i think the coolest temp I saw was around 54 F. Not bad at all.
I was plenty warm in my gear, and the snowy roads were just offroad. Mostly where there was shade most of the day...

I don't know of any commercial places you could take it to. (my neighbor paints vehicles, and will probably be doing my 1125 before summer).
That being said, you can remove all trim, etc, and sand, then primer it yourself.
I did that with my Subaru Brat many years ago. I brought it to the painters ready to go and ended up getting it painted, (one solid color) for about $150 buck. Course, that was back in '85.
