Hello fellow Buellers
I have an '08/'09 (cannot remember) XB9SX and it will not start. There are lots of loud clicks when I turn the ignition, but the engine does not even try to turn over.
The horn is strong, and lights are good, so I think the battery is fine. I put in a new one just last year so it should be good.
I have not ridden the bike in about 2-3 months, and it's been stored outside under a cover. We have had a lot of rain (I'm in Norther California) and there was a lot of condensation on the bike. I have it drying out in the sun now. Maybe water has gotten somewhere it should not have and that is keeping the bike from starting?
Was running fine before.
Any help would be most welcome. |

Update!
Looked more carefully at the wiring. Seems like one of the cables has been nibbled through by a critter. We have rat issues, and they have nibbled through cables in the past.
The wire goes from the trickle charge plug up to the battery. I'm not sure if this is the problem though, as I'm not using the trickle charger for anything in this instance, but maybe it's creating a short which is keeping the engine from turning over.
Thoughts? |

Clicking suggests not enough current. This can be due to a bad battery or loose connections (or corrosion) on the battery terminals, starter terminal or earths/grounds. |

Definitely check the relay's on the bike. Mine seem to last about a year or two and then go bad. |

OK.
Should I try to jump start the bike with my car battery? Will that tell me anything? |

Could be a suspect starter solenoid, but if critters have been at your wiring it'd be best to check for cables that have been severed thereby reducing the current carrying capacity.
Having said this, i've never known a rat to eat anything beyond the insulation on cables but it's possible that a short between cables or to ground has been created which would have the same effect.
Failing this, check your battery is up to spec, it would'nt be the first time a seemingly good battery can't deliver the goods.
When battery's are left unattended they tend to degrade by sulphation and a new battery can become porridge fairly easily. |

If you try to jump start your bike with a car, be sure that the car is NOT running. Your voltage regulator will not like that. |

I just bolt battery cables to a car battery and to the bike battery. If that doesn't push the solenoid, your issue is wiring or the starter itself (not likely to be the starter if it worked last time you tried). |

Its just a discharged battery. As Mrak said, you can jump it, but don't connect the car to the bike with the car running.
Your symptoms also mirror exactly what a loose or dirty battery terminal would do.
Get that trickle charger wire patched or replaced quickly, if it is the positive terminal and upstream of the fuse, your battery could become a welder in short order. |

charged up the battery are recommended, and it came back to life!!

I've wrapped electrical tape around the trickle charger wire. It really is chewed all the way through. I'll either splice a repair or get a new one.

Great news! The 9sx is an incredible little bike. I think that motor is the best all around motor to ever roll out of the motor company.
If it's like mine, it should be easy to replace, it's a standard connector at the auto parts stores (and that often come with the trickle charger). |
