Goody, what did you use on the frame and swing arm? Paint or powder coat.

Something you posted early on makes me concerned - you're using XB heads, with a Thunderstorm 1250 kit?

NO.

Pistons must match the heads and chambers. DO NOT use t-storm pistons with XB heads.

Lightning heads need lightning pistons.

Thunderstorm heads need thunderstorm pistons.

XB heads need XB pistons.

(I can't believe nobody mentioned that anywhere up above...unless I missed somewhere that you're using T-storm heads...)

I didn't get the XB heads, I stuck with the stock heads and rebuilt them. I was going to get the XB heads but realized just in time that they werent compatable with thunderstorm kit. So I quit bidding on the XB heads and let it go on ebay. I chose to paint the frame and body. I had it done professionally and with the exception of the engine cases I'm glad I didn't powder coat the frame. Powder coating is too thick and the tolerances would have been too tight with mounts. Paint chips easily and isn't as tough as powder coating but it is cheaper and easy to touch up. Here's where Im at so far, going to get the oil pump/hoses and hook up the battery today, hoping to get her lit off this week.

OK, yep...sorry, I missed the "didn't get XB heads" in there. Glad you've got a matched set : )

I've been half-thinking about tearing down my '01 and doing an orange frame and wheels. It's volcano gray with black frame and raw aluminum wheels now...just don't know if it's worth the time and effort, since it's been sitting for nearly 2 years now, "nicely preserved" in the garage under a cover : )

Here's where I am, I hooked up the oil pump and the electrical, shock and brakes. I turned her on, lights and front turn signals work, starter bumped over once briefly then nothing. I have some electrical troubleshooting to do with the starter system. Oh well, easy to fix and expected.

Rat, I bought this M2 knowing I would rebuild it someday in the near future. It was and is a fun rebuild. I like having a bike that I can say I made my own. It's still a M2L but I like having a hand in making it better.

Bad news... I traced my start problem to the starter, took it apart to find the contacts and plunger severely worn. Adding to the frustration is that I have to wait until next week to get the rebuild kit from Harley. I will get the tank put back together and finish up the front and rear end. I will have to wait until next week to light her off. DAM

Lakes, maiden voyage was Thursday evening. I unfortunately ran out of gas at my sisters place due to a leaky petcock valve. Apparently the rubber in the shut off valve deteriorates when not in fuel (ethanol). However the good thing is everything is time correctly, runs good, way more grunt down low. I put a V/H exhaust on it and I now have decel pop but I think that is because of the 1250 kit and the exhaust, I'm going to adjust the fuel screw and maybe put a bigger low speed jet in the carb. I will put us some pics this weekend. All told I have a total of $4000 into the bike, including the cost of purchase. A good deal in my mind and I have the satisfaction of knowing it's mine. I have a gopro cam that I will use for you tube and link from here.

sounds good Goody, i have not had an issue with stock petcock on my M2 yet, but i don't use ethanole gas as thats the low octaine gas here in Australia.
thats good it's got more low end grunt

Lakes, here is the link to my gopro ride on the M2 today. I went for a ride and the fuel issue is still there but it is very minor.
I have a new issue that I have to do some research on, my charging system isn't working, the bike runs great when the battery is fully charged but the battery isn't charging. I dont think the stator is the issue, I never touched it. I either have a loose connection in the charging wires or my voltage regulator is kaput. Any ideas?

Goody thanks for sharing, hey i've been to USA but here we ride on left side of road LOL. i had some trouble with my battery few months back, my friend hooked up a multi meter direct to stator started motor checked the output, that was strong checked regulator that was out, so got new regulator & new batery ( genuine AGM ) no problems since & i ride the bike a lot just about every day.

Lakes, I figured out my charging issue, poor ground connection. All charged up and running good now. First pic is what she looked like when I bought her. this is what I call a rough finish, now I get to work on the details that make her a finished project.

i'm thinking about lifting barrels & heads to check the motor & fitting new rings & servicing heads new valve stem seals.

Head work was surprisingly easy. I lapped the valves and resealed them. I think polishing the intake and exhaust made a difference. It is making more power that is for sure, seat of pants dyno can feel it. It has to be better than before with all of that carbon out of the heads. I would buy the NRHS 1250 kit. Good quality product in my honest opinion.

I know how you Aussies drive, i lived in Scotland for 4 years, never got the hang of driving on the left side of the road.lol

Goody, I got a good friend that has been doing Harley's a while. Will get him to hone bore out put new rings & he has an Italian valve seat cutting bench will doa valve job on it & the bench vacuumed tests the vavle seat seal. Mine has lot of carbon build up too as had intake manifold off b4. I also had it down drag strip a few times so I'll compare trap speed tell you what speed I get . Best speed now is 104mph 1/4. Mile

Just thought i'd mention i'll have the valves & seats cut on my friends Sedi, he has spent a lot of time setting this machine up to do quailty seats he also has a sunnen cylinder king to hone the barrels with torque plates. i'll use s&s push rods as strong & i think i might put cams in latter & can deck barrels to set compression.
just want to see if i can get a gain in trap speed at track with freashen up, as to me the black dyno is the best. will check afr on my friends dyno too but i can tell if i got more hp just looking at time card want to also check if 60ft times improve too. but it's not a race bike & i don't even do burnouts at track i just ride as you would off the lights. still a good way to check if things work.

I have done a few more things to it for looks, Im waiting on orange fuel and vacuum lines. I'm going to get some orange brake lines as well. It's getting there, the new Barnett clutch really makes a difference.

Goody , just thought I'd give you a tip. I'm running the stock M2 cams &. Set piston to head @ 40 thou swish & friend reseated stock valves cleaned up heads & put 1.72 ratio screaming eagle rockers in, stock rockers 1.63 these rockers look like stock too, but they open valves a bit more & open them faster close them faster so gives even more midrange torque, my motor feels really strong & responsive love it. Just used stock pistons but new rings & torque plates on barrels used sunnen stone hone to hone bore very happy

Lakes, the higher compression won't require higher octane fuel will it? Just wondering. All fuel here has a 10% ethanol blend in it. Its ok, but to get leaded fuel you have to look for it and its usually not local. I have run cam2 fuel in Buells before and there is a small power gain but I did it to get rid of the ocassional engine knock. I was thinking of getting different cams and tinkering with overlap but decided stock was fine. Now that I have the clutch replaced and dialed in, WoW! I can pop the front up with a twist of the throttle in 1st and 2nd. She wouldn't do that before the rebuild without the help of the clutch. Here are a few pics of the orange fuel and vent line that I got off of ebay. I'm going to replace the front brake line with a orange brake line and finish the carb with orange lines. It gives it a distinct look, I borrowed my ideas from my motocross bikes.

Man that looks great! You did a really good job with the paint colors. And if I may interject on the fuel octane discussion. My 97 has a NRHS 1250 kit with Andrews N8 cams, S&S Super E carb, ported and polished Thunderstorm heads, and Wiseco pistons, and pump gas works just fine! It pulls like a freight train in all gears.

Goody, yes i think if you have 215 pound cranking pressure like i have now you would need good gas. i can't do a direct comparition with your gas in USA as you have a different octane rating so if i told you the octane i run it would sound high, but we measure octaine at the refinery. but i have to run the highest premium and it does not have ethnole but is unleaded.
but i've ordered SE cam's i'll put the SE rockers to liven the cam up a bit but with 215 cranking pressure it's not knocking but on a real hot day it might. thats why i'm going to put the cams in it will lower the cranking pressure a bit.
Your bike looks great!
i will let you know how the cams work. but i'm going to the track with the bike soon & will do a dirrect compartion with the speeds & times i did with it stock. i will just ride it as i do off traffic lights no high rev launch, no burn out pull the clutch to shift, same as i did last time with the motor how it was.
also i have taken the spring plate out and got the extra plate clutch too, hooks up stronger. but from experience with street bikes at the drag strip a slipping clutch don't hurt times or speed unless its burnt out. but i checked the plugs and looks to be jetted about perfect looks like a fuel injected bike. runs silky smooth at rev's too. lifts front wheel up opening throtle clutch out too. but will wait till i look at time ticket at track.
interesting to note i've had every S&S carb they made , including the old L series & still have one of every model D, B, G, E. love them all. but i got this Woods Rebel 43.5 CV from an old friend in USA that got it built by Bob Wood, it works well has a spacer to increase fuel bowl, uses Holley jets so i can increse main jet in 1 Thou increasements. i flow tested it against an S&S G & it flowed same amount of air. it uses a stepped needle and this helps gas mileage. i get better gas mileage with this carb than with the stock CV40 but the stock CV40 is a fine carb too, just have to tune them .
sorry for the long post, your bike looks great!
i call mine Betty Buell.
cheers
