Hey everyone! I need some tech help. I have a 2008 XB12XT. Recently the voltage regulator failed and I had a check engine light with a code 16 for "battery voltage." I noticed that when the VR failed the engine ran a little differently with a somewhat rough idle and a hesitation from idle. When I replaced the VR, it began charging again at about 14.5v, the check eng light went out and it ran great. About 50 miles later it began running rough again and the check eng light came on with a code 16 again. However the charging voltage is still at 14.2v at idle and it never goes lower. I checked the VR connectors and cleaned all of my grounds and that hasn't done any good. Any ideas on what could cause a code 16 when it seems to be charging properly?

Can anyone maybe tell me where the ECM gets power? I'm afraid that either the ECM isn't getting proper voltage or it might need a new ECM.

I don't have the electrical pages right now but can get them next wednesday. I remember that there are two grounds from the ECM so make sure those are clean.

Did you change the plugs after the previous misfire?

The plugs are less than 1k old and I didn't replace them again. My description may have been a bit misleading but it doesn't actually misfire... It's not quite running rough... It's running more like it "needs a tune up." Coincidentally it feels the same as it did when I had a broken wire to my intake air temp sensor. It's just... not quite right. At this point the only thing that I can think of that is wrong is the ECM incorrectly throwing a code for battery voltage despite the fact that it is charging. I will probably end up taking it to the dealer to be sure.

The cam position sensor can fail in odd ways, including extra unwanted sparking which can cause rough idle and blips in the voltage drop which can fool the ECM into thinking the battery is dead or dying.

the wiring diagram shows that the black plug to the ECM provides power and ground. Pin number 1 is the switched ignition/power source. Pin numbers 2 and 11 are ECM grounds. Hope this helps a bit. Oh yeah I'm definitely a big Metalocalypse fan. My screen name was going to be the one I have now or Dr. Roxo, Kinda wish I went with the clown. I'll see if I can get my scanner to work and PM you the wiring.

In case anyone was curious, it turned out to be a faulty ECM. I got one from EBR, plugged it in and she's right as rain again. Thanks for the input, guys!
