Took my r1100gs out yesterday. Its got an Aeroflo windshield - kept me out of the wind pretty good, but I sure missed the Ulysses powerplant's warmth. What's a good windscreen for my palmer brackets during the cooler weather? dean in old hickory, tn dean@learntoride.org |

BAW! http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/408955.html Of course you really don't need Palmer brackets for this thing... |

Ben - Are you using the Fork Deflectors or some sort of universal fit from their "Lowers" menu? I don't see anything specific to the Buell. Thanks George - I'm only two month's out from 40 and I don't get it either. I'm sure they block wind going into it, but anything from the side or back might just be dangerous. I don't love my bike, or riding that bad, that is what the truck is for... ...with heated gear and grips, and soon to be added hand guard extensions, I just won't be out if it's bad enough to need a super-sized wind block. I once had an Aprilia RSV-R and the wind blast at 100 was bad. At 120 it was dangerous for me to ride the bike. On the 10 Uly I can cruise at 100 in comfort and 120 it is still easy. I have been out on the bike in this cold weather, 0 to 5C, in my HG Gore-Tex and leather suit with thermals under the pants, a jacket liner and just a Tee shirt with Sidi Courier boots. I run vented race gloves most of the time but I have only just started to use my winter gloves. The odd thing is that I have not been cold. On all of my past bikes I would need my fully lined suit on top of my other gear long before it got to 5C and ALWAYS had cold feet (hate that) and hands. I think the hand guards work well and the covers on the fork lowers are deflecting air (and rain) away from my feet and the frame protects my knees. I am very tall so the air hits me from the neck up (I have to use extra layers to stop the air getting in/under my helmet) but the airstream is "clean" and I get NO head buffeting with the right helmet. I have no "air pressure" on my chest or arms either. I have always had water from the back wheel "flipping" onto my back with the Uly and fitting a "tail tidy" has made it much worse. But thats my fault. I can deal with that ok. All in all I am amazed that this bike offers so much weather protection given that it is, after all said an done, a naked bike. I do not know how they did it or if was just dumb luck, it happens, I am just happy it works for me. |

I bought my bike one year ago. When I went to look at it, before buying, I was sure I'd need a bigger shield, even though it was equipped with the factory tall. I found out about the Madstad & Palmer brackets and was sure that with an adjustable, larger windshield everything would be OK. As it turned out, the more I rode it as it was, the more I appreciated the original design (factory tall option). I understand some people need more cover in harsh weather, but so far I'm happy, and it looks good , without changing anything. |

Eulysses, I'm 58. I don't see the benefits of screens. My other bike is a Suzuki B-King and I go Winter touring on it in northern Spain which is wet and cold at that time of year. Screens cause turbulence. |

I agree with Uly man. I have no problems with wind blast on the Uly and the B-King is even better. 100 mph no problem whatsoever but I don't go faster than that. Well not often. |

Breaking down this winter and putting on a parabellum windshield after I strip all of the plastic off my Uly. I am going to Hydrographic dip all of the plastic parts. http://parabellum.com/ |

It seems that some people are stuck on form over function.
Frequent 50 mile rides that end in snow or sleet can change your mind(I use my bike for my work transporting moving trucks and such). A few times I have done a 750 mile ride to Florida for motorcycle races where the temperature never rose out of the thirty degree range for more than a couple of hours. You go ahead and trailer yours to Daytona.....I will ride. When in a group of Uly riders I usually am the one not frozen and shaking. I hate being cold. Personally I love riding my Uly with it's stock screen. Everything I have tried between the stock screen and my BAW buffets my helmets. If you look at the BAW logically, it is no larger than the profile of the rider's body(some of us are big boned) so actually it smooths out the air flow that would otherwise hit the rough contours of the rider's body parts. It makes no difference in any wind conditions or traffic air movement on the Interstate at speed either. |

Does the BAW affect your MPG's? |

The BAW positively affects his mpg. Without it Etennuly would only be getting 10 mpg because he'd be using his truck instead of the ULY. |

In summer I am fine with stock screen but in NW we are a little chilly a lot of the year so the big Palmer and brackets work in spring and fall...but I had a bigger one I patched up from a megga Harley screen. Sooo comfy. Past looking cool and just wanting to ride. Going to add the grip screens. I just like to ride...and hate getting cold.

I just want to know which lowers I should order, people keep mentioning them but tease me in never telling me the source. Tomorrow it will be 40-ish on the way in to work, making the air comfortable, and the roads warm... ...the snow will be melting all afternoon, running over the road in many places... ...choosing to ride to work in this is fine, but overnight the temps will drop and the freely running water will freeze leaving patches of black ice for my commute home in 23-26 degree temps. Lame. I don't trust the weather to ride at night in the late Fall and Winter here. With work 'round five miles from home I find the bikes parked more often than not, the things hardly get warmed up before I shut them off again. Anyway, about those lowers, Chris? Ben? |

MEP5811 (Dark gray) Lowers & MEM9890 Universal metric bracket were what I am using. I ground down the lowers w/a dremel to get a better fit as I angled them backwards a bit to allow easy key usage. |

I am never quite sure what people want from this bike? The screen and hand guards do a VERY good job, for a naked bike and best I have ever had, and for its "brick like" looks the Uly runs well. On the other hand if you think you can run it for 100 miles plus, at even 50f, with a barn door up front and no good rider kit then you WILL BE COLD. Do not blame the bike, blame nature. Or if short of leg either. |

Question for Britchri10 : Do the lowers cut off any air flow to the engine causing it to run hotter? |

Uly_man, I definitely agree with you but also it does kind of suck to wear 15 layers riding a motorcycle. I think an investment in heated gear would be a wiser expenditure though. |

I have the Memphis Shades lowers on and I think they are mounted higher than any cooling air for the engine. I do wonder if they keep the frame/fuel from getting its share of cooling air, though. I put them on in cool weather, but remove them otherwise. I must say I am on the fence as to if they help for me. Several report reduced windblast under helmet and quieter ride, but I would say my experience is a small improvement in wind and no change to noise. However, I did just add a Laminar Lip to my Buell tall shield that is mounted with Palmer brackets. Only 1 ride on it so far, but I was impressed. I finally may have found protection up to visor level without much helmet buffeting. Plus, I can always adjust it since I have the Palmers. I am 6'-4" with 36" inseam, FYI. tall windshield alone always made for a loud helmet and some buffeting no matter what palmer position. stock flyscreen alone makes for quiet, clean air, but only protects my chest from the windblast. Great for warm weather. |

I'd like to try a laminar lip on my madstad tall windshield. Where could I find one? |

You can buy them direct from laminarlip.com They're not cheap, but I already had sunk the money into the other parts (Palmer, tall Buell shield), and it can be re-mounted with additional 3M adhesive fasteners (it comes with 2 sets of mounting dual-locks). |
