I have a 99 x1 lighting that you can ride put it away for a week or 2 doesnt leak a drop of oil after that it starts leaking maybe from the rubber hoses behind oil filter then runs down and drips from middle of cases i just dont get why its fine for a week or 2 then all of sudden next day it just starts leaking.anybody had this problem or any ideas a buddy of mine said something about sportster motors having a check ball behind oil filter??? I dont no any helpbe greatly apppreciated 12000 miles on bike. |

The motor was designed in 1986.Old school. When the bike sits for a few days the oil from the tank will seep past the oil pump into the crank case.This is why you need to check the oil level after you run the motor allowing time for the oil in the crank case to return to oil tank. It should not however end up on the ground. Degrease the motor and let it sit until it leaks and you should see where it's coming from. Probably the oil line. could be where the crank case halves meet . |

If the rubber oil filter lines are 13 years old, they have rubbed themselves leaky. The hole can be covered for a week at a time by whatever it chafed against and then when the line flexes it can sprout again. Perhaps its just a clamp, more likely the hoses. |
