I am looking at a new exhaust setup and am wondering if I "have to" switch to a race ECM or if I can do the exhaust swap, then add the ECM later.... |

It's been generally accepted that you can run the k&n filter without swapping to the race ECM, but running an open exhaust requires the user to replace the stock unit for a race ECM. You don't want to scrimp here. A lean condition makes the bike run like sh!% and you risk component damage from running lean (holing a piston). Of course you can use a PowerCommander to compensate with a stock ECM instead of buying a race ECM, but that opens up another can of options. Get the race ECM if your going to change exhausts. |

Based on my experience with this, if you install just a pipe without Race ECM, you will loose some mid range power/torque and the bike will pop and fart when you close the throttle. The Race ECM will restore the midrange and minimize the back-fires. If you change the pipe, you will need the K&N type air filter to make the bike breath easier at both ends. Mark

I understand that about the loss of midrange, its just a cashflow problem that cropped up after I ordered up the pipe and I really don't want to have it sitting around til I can get a race ECM. |

I don't want to highjack this thread, but I was wondering if using the stock can with the Race ECM would be OK for a short while. Supposing I got a fix-it ticket for the exhaust, would it hurt to run the stock exhaust with the Race ECM? |

Xb9 said he had a slightly used Race ECM for a 9 but this is for my 12, and its been said that using the ECM for a 9 on a 12 is a big no no. A "fix-it-ticket" is what the cops give you to fix something they determine to be broken. When you get it fixed there is no fine, if you don't get it fixed...they fine ya. |

Bubba, a fix-it ticket is a violation that is a non-moving type. Light bulb out, registration out of date, etc. In California, the emissions are part of the vehicle code. Supposedly, one can not legally change any portion of the engine or exhaust. I can't remember them enforcing the exhaust part, though. |

Kaese- The exhaust stuff in Ca pretty much depends on how much of a jerk the LEO perceives you as being. They will use WHATEVER they can to give you grief for doing something else - if they can't really nail you properly for that something else. I got pulled over a few weeks ago for going well over 80 in a 65. I was cooperative. I got a ticket for 80 in a 65. Nothing regarding exhausts - and I couldn't hear the guy's PA over my bike and I KNOW he knew that. I know one guy who not only got written up for crossing the double yellow but also a slew of other stuff - including exhaust. On the Crest and around Mulholland, they will CRUCIFY you for crossing a double yellow. Anyway, off topic. Stopping now... -Saro |

I was cooperative. I got off with the verbal warning pertaining to my non-translucent windscreen, exhaust and lane splitting (he claimed it was illegal). I just nodded my head, and gave him no guff. Personally, I think he just wanted to check out my bike. I have been stopped before on my S2 and it has a Vance & Hines, nothing was ever said about it. edited by kaese on January 27, 2004 |

I never looked for that stamp, will keep that in my mind for the next retort. That CHiP cop has an reputation out here. I believe that he has stopped quite a few bikers out here. By the way, could you look up how much a set of front and rear brake pads would be? |

Wykedflesh, I have split lanes all the way up to 80MPH, but don't really like to be going that fast. I is usually the case of another bike blowing by me and my instincts are to keep up with them. I use these general guidelines as how I was taught at MSF instructor school: Go only 10MPH faster that the flow of traffic (Should be able to react in a safely in time) Supposedly, the upper limit for safety is 20MPH (That really depends how much of a hurry I am in) And the most important: If you don't feel comfortable doing it, then don't! Bryan, the rear has more pad than the front, and it was a what the heck Had no clue how much they were.

Ok, that's where the cop is right, per the motorvehicle handbook, you can lane split as long as traffic is moving less then 10mph and you are not going more then 10mph faster then traffic. Its the only moving violation I ever got on a motorcycle and even that got dropped due to the officer not showing in court. On that date there were about 6 other riders in that had lanesplitting tacked on. The judge pulled out the book and read the passage then looked out and told anyone if they were outside that, to expect a fine. I was at the time doing 45 with traffic doing 35 on the 410 in LA. |
