Thinking of repainting the frame on my tuber. So what holds up the best, paint or powder coat. |

The best is nickel plating but if you want color powder coating |

Powder, definitely. Take it to a shop that does a lot of powder. They should take the proper care to keep powder out of the threads and mating points. Powder goes on thick; if there is a surface that mates to another part and clearance is an issue, make sure to mark it off so they don't coat it and cause problems. |

So how much will it cost for powder, ballpark. |

Northern California; got my s1 frame coated for $350. This was a two part process where it was pc'd semigloss black, then matte clear powder on top. One coat will be fine and will be cheaper. I was going for something different. You get what you pay for though; make sure you take it to someone who knows bikes. I've used so called professionals before and they coated neck cups and all. |

I had my X1 frame and wheels powder coated white in 2006 (i think) not a mark or scratch on it, holding up great! would definitely do powder coat instead of paint on a frame and wheels. Im thinking about doing it to my S1W which has a black frame and I would like the frame to stand out more...either white or red. |

...if your S1W has a black frame, that makes it one of the rarest. Just sayin'. |

Round off all the sharp edges of the frame tabs and holes with a file so any finish you use has paint where it needs it as a sharp edge will tend to be only thinly covered. Have a look at your frame and if there are any rust marks checkout why. You could weld a brace to the front engine mounting point to stiffen it like the X1 frame. I cut off the steering lock and welded it up as it had been letting water in (and lost the key) , I also checked all the fixing threads and let them paint them in and just tapped the ones I wanted.Powder coat was skimpy on the underside of one part and where two surfaces were close to each other , maybe that was lack of air flow.. |

The frames were powder coated to being with. Make sure any threads are covered and that any electrical ground spots are also covered. it really causes problems if threads are coated with powder as this stiff is very tough. |

davegess better double check the statement that the frames were powdercoated, my 96 is original painted, not PC'ed. |
